658522 2008-04-21 10:01:00 We had a couple of Mitubishi Heat Pumps installed over a year ago and wouldn't be without them now. They are really cheap to run compared with other methods. The cooling in summer is good but the heating in winter is even better. Our power bill hardly went up but we used them plenty last winter. Leave one on in the hallway overnight on low fan speed. You can just hear it - bit like light rain on the roof. We are in Hamilton so it gets quite humid in the summer and these units are very good at getting rid of that on the cool or dehumidify cycle. muzza (7316)
658523 2008-05-07 23:22:00 I've heard from some people that the government gives subsidies if you buy a heat pump, true or not?

Just wondering if a heatpump would be suitable for a house which has no fireplace or heater or anything.

Or would a woodburner in this case be better? I am not sure about the difference in heating between a woodburner and a heatpump. Could someone explain? ta

Have not heard of the government subsidiesing heat pumps.

Get the experts round to your house and they well measure it up to till you what size heat pump/pumps you would need.

658526 2008-05-08 00:44:00 I put one in a copuple of years ago for the same reason that Thomas did....
We put these in because I am getting past lugging around large baskets of firewood, lighting the fire then waiting up to an hour for things to heat up. So, best thing we have done for our winter comfort for a long time. A lot of crap is talked about free or cheap firewood. Have you priced it recently? And then it blocks your drive for several days while you hump and stack it. Then the daily drudge of shifting itnindoors..... forget it. ;)

City Firewood in ChCh will provide a stacker if you ask nicely. It costs about $30 for a load (I think it is about $20 per cubic metre). Seems like slave labour, but I like it, having reached BOF age.

Wood is one of those products that heats you more than once .

1) Chopping it
2) Splitting/stacking it
3) Burning it .

I guess the jury's back in on the heat pumps . . . but here in the US they are just wasteful as they make radical swings in temp from too cold to too hot .

Even commercial buildings are moving away from them since the pro-furor of them has died out and everyone has found them to be noisy, expensive and wasteful of energy .

There may be a big difference in what a NZ-er will tolerate with their heating and cooling bills . . . and maybe youse guys get free electricity too for all I know .

Kw/hour-for-kw/hr, you cannot beat a good ol' natural gas furnace and a swamper in my locality . . but that isn't true for places that have much higher humidity factors to consider .

Funny though . . . the EPA and the California EPA have all put new rules on the books concerning wood/coal burning fireplaces . After such-and-such a date, they have to be removed, rendered inoperable or cannot be allowed to stay in a home at resale .

Installations in new home are forbidden unless they are pellet-burners . The bill was written by the PFCA (Pellet Fuel Company of America) .

658529 2008-05-08 05:18:00 Wrong about the power bills Joe, Electricity is very expensive here. My heatpump is proving to be very efficient and much cheaper to run than my little old fan heater. lakewoodlady (103)

Sometimes in the Winter . . which has passed now in the Rightsideup half of the world, I will turn on an oil radiator in my room . . . it's one that uses electricity to heat a reservoir of oil and it radiates heat like an old fashioned steam radiator .

When I do . . the electric bill goes thru the roof .

My wife likes her side of the room/house as cold as she can get it . . me? I like my half as hot as a tropical paradise . All that's missing in my life is a parrot in a banana tree and some fresh pineapple growing in the back yard .

I can understand why a portable heater like yours would cause such a fee hike too . . .

I just hate converting energy and reverse flow of it via a heat pump . . which we in the US are steering 'way clear of presently .

The bubble has burst on sales of them and they are being traded out for more conventional heaters/cooling units when they die or become more and more prohibitive as the utility bills climb with the energy coasts soaring .

Time will tell if they ever sell again in the US in the great numbers they did at one time . . about 10 or 15 years ago .

They never really panned out in most homes . . but there are some people who want their creature comfort no matter the costs .

Even good ol' Pres Bush gave a speech today . . saying that he " . . . . . . feels the pain of the working class and the expensiveness (sic) it has generated just to drive to and from their jobs" . :crying

Nice guy . . . but his 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue address is all utilities paid by the taxpayers .

I wonder WHAT he really feels . :annoyed:

Absolutely useless things compared with a heat pump.
In the previous house my mother lived in I had installed a heat pump and the house was actually warm compared with the oil column heater and she did not notice any difference in her power bill.
