659128 2008-04-21 06:25:00 At my age, it is pretty hard to tell what is good or bad as far as audio goes. Component from a hidef camcorder over component is pretty darned good.

Some of these people should insure their hearing and sight if it is as good as some say.

Perhaps Hardley Normal could sell a person a set of real expensive audio and HDMI cables and chuck in a free LDC TV.

Yes, I am being a bit cynical!!!!

659129 2008-04-21 06:51:00 And to notice anything you would have like a sound proof Home Theater room just for movies/music because off all the other "noise pollution" or whatever from others etc.Oh yeah and that room and everything in it would be like the best and greatest latest stuff at half the price of a average house because you got to have the best because you can hear the difference don't you know?:rolleyes: memphis (2869)
659130 2008-04-21 06:51:00 Anyone else seen the latest Hardley Normal's High Definition info flyer with "Monster" HDMI cable prices.

Must be exceptional stuff at these prices

Monster HDMI Series1 4ft cable @ $169.95
Monster HDMI Series 7000 1M @ $249.95
Monster HDMI Series 1000 1M @ $399.95

Read this article, as Rod Drury purchased 2 of them, but later returned them.

This kind of thing is a bit of a scam, and should be looked at. It is a bit like those power surge devices that Noel Leemings used scare people into buying, showing people an adapter that had been zapped by a power surge, and how it had protected the device. They were trying to get people to buy them for $100's about a decade ago, when you can buy them now for a few dollars.

I think someone who purchased these over priced cables from Hardly Normal and who feel ripped off, should get the commerce commission to investigate Hardly Normals sales practices and whether what they do justifies the price, and perhaps get them independently tested, to see if there really is a difference between an average priced cable, and these expensive cables. It would quite a good Fair Go story too, especially as HD Freeview is quite popular topic at the moment, and people often have to buy the cable seperately. If they can clearly show a difference for freeview users, making them worth the money, then that is fine. However if a $30 cable can do the same thing, then it is something they should look stomping out, to protect consumers from these Australian companies that prey on the naivety of some NZ consumers.

659134 2008-04-24 06:46:00 Look at a HiFi magazine for reviews of expensive cables. People seem to like paying high prices for their gear. The high price helps them to believe that the cables work better.

They like getting the gear "cheap", too ... here's a local example (www.trademe.co.nz). The BS probably helps. Wouldn't you like "cables [which] attain the elusive goal of combining exquisite sonic detail with the beauty of true musicality"?

No one is forced to buy this stuff.

659135 2008-04-24 07:19:00 Personally I do not hear too much difference in cables.

There again I am not an Audiophile as such. I used to work for a New Zealand Company whom imported the likes of Denon, Wharfdale and other very good audio and visual equipment. Monster cables were even supplied way back then. A dvd disk was approx 8" at that time.

Just checked out their web site and found out that the Managing director has changed as well as the account manager. It used to be a Husband and Wife team. I have met the current Managing Director and He seemed to be a good guy.

They presently advertise Bose and we were selling that brand as well.

I have not worked for these people for many years and I have no idea of the present state of affairs.

If anyone wishes to PM me I could tell you who they are.

659136 2008-04-27 09:12:00 There is a case for higher quality HDMI cables 'if' you're running lengths longer than a couple of metres, or you require some of the fancy x.v.Colour, 1080p/60, lossless audio stuff that some components now offer...
For the vast majority of setups any HDMI cable will do the trick.
Being digital, the difference is not really in picture/sound quality (i.e. the things they advertise!) but in signal integrity. There are certifications on some cables to show they have been tested to offer sustained data rates (over 10Gbps is required for HDMI v1.3a). This doesn't however tell you other cables don't support these speeds, but it's peace-of-mind.
Blue Jeans Cable offers a load of information at www.bluejeanscable.com - you can purchase from their .co.uk site if you're convinced (they're a LOT cheaper than Monster and well rated), but as noted it's only really worth the cost and hassle if you're looking at long runs and the most cutting-edge video components.

you can't compare it to selling power surge protectors.
most of those cheap ones your buying are more than likly to be useless. for anything seriously good its going to cost $100 and up.
i've seen plenty of dead applainces that died even with a protector and don't forget a lot of applainces have got their own built in. so basicly double lot of cheap protection didn't do jack.

the real scam of those was the flash looking ones that retailed for hundreds of $$ but had the basic cheap crap inside it.
