Its about aesthetics and consistency.
Why aluminum?
Recyclable.

Correct - nothing illegal at all.

However installing OS X on non Mac hardware breaks the EULA with Apple.

Installing Safari for windows on windows also breaks the EULA..

Maybe the thought of someone NOT buying their overpriced hardware is too much for them - or maybe it's the fact that not buying their hardware would be a sensible idea.

Could be a good marketing strategy for them actually, sell copies of mac os that can run on suitable hardware, perhaps they can reach out to PC users who already have the hardware but want the OS... you know, the one that doesn't get viruses, never crashes, doesn't annoy you :p

They've already got XP and Vista running on Macs, shouldn't be too hard

658916 2008-04-16 18:53:00 Installing Safari for Windows on Windows is fine- that is why it is called Safari for Windows . Safari for Windows gets more users using Safari and more developers developing sites for Safari which paves the way for iPhone users who use Safari, so no its not actually a "dumb" idea.

XP and Vista on a Mac also makes virtualisation easier.

Agent_24 was referring to this (stash.ableapp.com) recent news item. I'm sure it's been fixed now though and has been forwarded as an update for those Windows users that don't actually use Safari .

658918 2008-04-16 21:30:00 It's understandable, they would have been too busy rewriting code to get it running on windows that they would have completely forgot to change the EULA. Agent_24 (57)

No worry there, it doesn't say where the Apple label has to come from, or who makes the label either.

Ah, thanks for that. Bit ironic eh.

I see Safari 3.1.1 has been released for Mac and PC

658921 2008-04-17 08:16:00 I kinda like the idea. Like I said before, I would be more likely to buy Mac OSX if all I needed to get was a cheap Intel (maybe AMD in the future?) platform to run it on.

Then it would be built with high quality parts, assembled by me, easily upgradeable, and not cost several limbs.

As far as hardware goes in the short term PCs are "cheaper" to purchase in the sub $1800 (unless you are using Mac minis - $948) price bracket for a business or small enterprise, it's when you get to the long term investment and software licensing that Microsoft will shaft you $$$$. Funnily enough Apple's Xserve licensing is actually much cheaper with an unlimited user license at $1449 - the Xserve will run on non Apple hardware - Apple is bringing in MS Exchange in June with the iPhone. blogs.zdnet.com
