658512 2008-04-14 23:25:00 I live in a bunch of own your own flats. The lady next door has a Fujitsu HP and as soon as I go out my front door I can hear her out side unit going above mine which I'm standing next to. Hers is about 15m away.

658513 2008-04-15 00:01:00 I guess there's always the temptation to think it's costing you less, so you can run it more too!! nofam (9009)
658514 2008-04-15 00:45:00 The other thing you have to watch for with a heat pump is the location of the inside unit. Ours is high on the wall, and not far from where we sit when watching tv. In the summer it is nice to have the cooling breeze blowing on us of course, but in the winter, the heating "breeze" feels like a nasty draft.

The unit is in the only place it could be in that room, but it is still a pain. Some of the newer models (ours is about 4-5 years old) have a control that allows you to turn the vanes up and down (like ours) and sideways to direct the flow off you. I suggest you look carefully at placement, and also as how many controls you have over the airflow.

A lot of that can be the instalation. eg is it mounted on rubber feet or straight on concrete.

658516 2008-04-15 22:41:00 I'm not keen.

Depends what heating you used before. If electric, then yes I'd say the power bill wouldn't change much.

But a friend went from a woodburner to one and her power bill did go up. Heaps.
They might be better than convential electric heating but they sure aren't cheap.
Question is,did it go up more than the cost of fuel for wood burner?

658517 2008-04-17 02:41:00 What a coincidence - I am just having a Fujitsi Heat Pump installed as I sit here and type.

Some messages fill me with misgivings about it - but should know soon whether the outside unit will deafen us and the neighbours :waughh:

Yes.
Wood here is $40 - $45 a metre. Coal, the dirty, filthy stuff is even cheaper.

Chainsaw + Petrol + Vehicle costs to get there and back does not equal free.

658521 2008-04-17 05:10:00 Fair call. I should not assume everyone has plenty of trees to chop down on their property, and a chainsaw.

The petrol costs for a chainsaw are pretty minimal.
