| 658430 | 2008-04-14 12:00:00 | China and India have serious and entrenched problems with human rights, equality, poverty, pollution, civil conflicts and related issues. China is not democratic. India is, but is riven with corruption and sectarianism. A very large proportion of either country cannot read or write. All the wonderous tales of economic development you see and hear in the news has happened in isolated cases and has favoured mostly the elite. The vast majority of the populace of both live in squalor and deprivation. In effect, it is like a bubble itself. Wealth of either country, and those like them, is built on cheap labour and the neglect of basic rights. Sooner or later, dissatisfaction will boil over. I haven't been in either country in years, but from what I hear things have not improved much for the poor. As far as New Zealand is concerned, it should be OK providing it does not depend on either country too much. Actually both countries have a large no. of people who have benefited from the stock market. Reliance Industries in India actually holds the record for the most no. of stockholders in one company. Adjusting for a 7 to 1 split, a 3 to 1 split, 2 bonus scriptures and total division of the company, most people have doubled or tripled their investment We're talking >1 million people. Of course none of the countries can lift 100 or 200mn people into the middle classes at once. If they did imagine everyone in the West rising up and harping on about the pollution caused by this uplifting. |
