798445 2009-08-06 07:53:00 If she is in a halls of residence, while she may have a phone socket that she can pay for monthly, she may not have entire ownership of it, some halls of residences in Dunedin works via a shared agreement that means there might be 30 students who have paid for their own phones but at any one time only 15 people can make phone calls. Althou there are some halls of residences that does have full ownership of it, ie. you could in my days have dialup Zfree all day if you liked and have your mobile phone for voice calls. Not all rooms will have a phone socket.
Correct, but almost all universities have either wired or wireless network access available in all their accommodation areas, and (mostly) unrestricted internet access is available for a minimal fee, often free. As a result, you don't need a phoneline or mobile datacard in order to get a net connection.

798446 2009-08-06 07:58:00 Maybe but wireless wasn't available when I was there, wired depends only to certain rooms and depends on which halls of residence. I had it but that was at the senior flats. We paid $5-10 a month for the jackpoint and running cost were free as paid via the course fees already. But it blocked certain ports like MSN..... Some of the newer built halls of residences may have it thou.

The further away ones the logistics were just not suitable. I may check the otago uni website....

798447 2009-08-06 08:11:00 Upon investigation there is wireless today at Otago Uni. But I think it may not be sufficient.

It appears that if you are at the closest hall of residence you are still maybe 20m away. The one at the Commerce Building. If you are at other halls, you are too far away.
My guess would be that the hotspost is at the foyer. On the middle between concrete and on basement floor.

Maybe the studetnt have access to network jack in the room?

798448 2009-08-09 09:43:00 Thanks for all the advice. She is in Carrington and even though in the book it says they all have wireless her building cannot get it. Yet her friend in another building wasn't supposed to be able to but can. Anyway she has downloaded her updates in the student computer room. We now have to wait until 21st Aug for her bytes to start again so will se what happens on that day. Even though bill has been paid she cannot start up until then according to Vodafone and I think this may have been some of the problem. Once you get up to your limit you are charged 50cents a thing and neither of us realised this, even though you have paid up the account in full. Unfortunately she signed up for 24 months (we were naive, both of us and this has been a very expensive learning excercise. Muffin11 (15150)
798449 2009-08-09 09:48:00 I forgot to say will keep you informed once the 21st rolls around. Muffin11 (15150)

798451 2009-08-10 02:00:00 Muffin11, You said you are charged 50cents per MB once you reach your Limit. THAT IS WRONG.
Once you reach your limit that FIRST time you pay $10 and your limit is RESET and you can use all your data AGAIN. Once you reach your limit the SECOND time then you have to pay 50cents per MB.
Read it here:

www.vodafone.co.nz d=onAccount&menuKey=mnit600004

Click on "SHOW DETAILS" then it says:

"We'll charge you a flat $10 and let you take it to the limit again. If you go beyond this second limit, you'll be charged at $0.50 per MB. "

Ring Vodafone and see if she can pay $10 to have her limit DOUBLED.

798452 2009-08-10 04:13:00 But is that monthly or just the once.
Month 1 I break the limit pay $10 and it gets doubled
Month 2 I break the limit pay $10 and it gets doubled
Rinse and repeat

I think its more likely that
Month 1 I break the limit and pay $10
Month 2 I break the limit and pay 0.50 per Mb

798453 2009-08-10 08:49:00 I guess if Woosh is not available in Dunedin. There is no ADSL available at her room. There is no wireless available to her as she has tried. If she wants internet other than going to the campus every time, then I guess mobile cellular internet is the only way...... Nomad (952)
798454 2009-08-11 02:51:00 instead of guessing, go to the vodafone site and look. i posted the link :)
