658855 2008-04-15 05:20:00 Well thanks for the comments chaps.
Here is an update.
I had decided that Cotters would be my choice. Cheapness is OK as long as you do not need service - but Cotters do service not only what they sell but other stuff as well.
Looking at the new stuff I was rather surprised to find out that the completely floating heads design is no longer available - all Philips models now come with the interconnected heads - most people MUST find it better or by now they would have dropped it.

My decision was to buy new - I feel that if I bought just new heads then my battery would probably die next - and so on. I would end up paying more than the cost of a new one.

Looking back into my own shaving history I remember several different models - my first was an Arvin (made in Britain). Just a single head driven by what looked like the old electric bell principle.
A cheap Remington was a disaster.
One of the best was a Ronson - I suppose it was made by the same people who made the lighters.
I only got rid of it as moving to the USA I needed a different voltage device.
Does Ronson still exist. They had a thin foil and a blade reciprocated from side to side. Looked a simple and effective design and the Consumers rated them as best one year.

I'm using a Braun ,same action as the description you've given of the Ronson. Not as good as the Philips re cutting longer hairs but leaves a smoother skin than the P.

658858 2008-04-15 06:28:00 Once a month I run the clippers with a #3 comb over my beard.

The rest of the time I just look down at the hairless.

658859 2008-04-15 07:36:00 I bought 2 Remingtons.
One the Philips style 3 header which I use first for long hairs, then finish off with foils and the the result is I look gorgeous.

Good decision - how many times have we repaired or renewed something only to buy a new one a fairly short time after !

658863 2008-04-18 18:07:00 Well, the second hand one I just paid $5.00 for (It had been dropped) is the replacement for the Phillishave I gave $20.00 for as a trade-in about 30 years ago. This "New" one is my third Phillips, having a beard for most of my life surely helped with prolonging razor life. R2x1 (4628)
658864 2008-04-19 00:11:00 Well, the second hand one I just paid $5.00 for (It had been dropped) is the replacement for the Phillishave I gave $20.00 for as a trade-in about 30 years ago. This "New" one is my third Phillips, having a beard for most of my life surely helped with prolonging razor life.

For about 20 odd years I also sported a beard. No doubt about the fact that it saves on razors.

I wonder about the cost of $5 for a dropped secondhand razor. I thought about putting ours in the garage sale for either $1 or free. But decided that even as a free item it still was not worth it to anybody as the heads badly needed replacing and do cost near enough to $100 especially when adding in the cost of petrol etc to get the things. I dumped it even though it still ran perfectly. Perhaps the one you bought still had good heads.

Now I wonder about my own razor. The heads should be replaced every two years. But will I?
Dunno - I made the last ones go for four years. And no matter what I do the same question will arise - "Is it worth it or is a new one best?"
