| 658728 | 2008-04-16 02:44:00 | Hey, I just thought I'd ask you guys' opinion on something. I'm looking at getting a comp, and have priced up most of the parts at ascent. After looking around I can see that maybe I'll save $30 on the CPU if I buy it at X, or $40 on the GFX if i buy at Y, overall it makes my comp about $150 cheaper (just an estimate). But I've never heard of half the places that pricespy calls the cheapest... so I'm wondering. Do you think $150 worth the peace of mind that I'll get from buying entirely from somewhere like ascent? And the fact that if anything goes wrong I only have to talk to the one place? Plus they have a free installation policy if I buy from them. Basically, is frantically pricespying worth it in your opinion? |

Monkey, have you heard of a thing called haggling? Haggle Ascent down, I am sure they will lower their prices. |

| 658731 | 2008-04-16 12:07:00 | The difference in speed between the fastest amd processor and intel processor isn't that big of a difference is it? I always loved Amd for some strange reason.... |

| 658732 | 2008-04-16 12:17:00 | AMD's fastest dual core would be the 6400+, which would be comparable to an E6600-E6700. But these days you could get an E6750 or E8200 which are faster and highly overclockable. Even Intel's slowest quad, Q6600 pretty much kicks all AMD's quads. |

| 658734 | 2008-04-17 00:32:00 | Oh dear What happen to AMD when it was ahead of intel? It's called keeping not keeping their eyes open, and R & D. Unfortunately, they're bleeding cash atm, and to combat that they've downsized their R & D dept. So don't count on them coming back any time soon. Their latest gen chips are roughly as good as intels year old ones... if not worse. Also, they're running at a higher Nm process than Intel are, 65Nm, compared to 45Nm. (from memory that is, I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong.) The up side to this is, though, that while they're not that good, they're cheap. |

I got motherboard, graphic card, cpu and memory from pbtech and rather than just walk around the shop I spoke to a tech there who walked around and got it for me then gave me a good discount at the end of it over the web price . I am about to upgrade another pc here and will use them again . I compared pricing on ascent and pbtech and some things are cheaper at one and some at the other . pbtech also has some items cheaper than ingram which did surprise me . |

| 658736 | 2008-04-21 03:06:00 | Hi all, I've put together the following build on Ascent's PC Builder. My price range is roughly $1000-$1400, not including monitor, mouse or keyboard. What do you think of my selections? Anything I can change for the better? The most intensive task it will be used for is DV editing, otherwise just standard home/home office use, little to no gaming. Price/performance is very important to me, as well as reliability and upgradability (I know LGA 775 is on its way out this year). Raidmax Luna2 ATX Mid Tower Case, 500W PSU, Side Window, Silver $179.67 www.ascent.co.nz Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L Motherboard $179.37 www.ascent.co.nz Intel Core 2 Duo E4700 2.6 GHz, 800MHz FSB $238.80 www.ascent.co.nz Seagate Barracuda ST3500320AS Hard Disk Drive, 500GB $155.76 www.ascent.co.nz Asus DRW-2014L1T DVD Writer $59.40 www.ascent.co.nz Corsair XMS2, TWIN2X2048-6400, 2x1GB $76.40 www.ascent.co.nz Asus EN8600GT/HTDI/256M Video Card, GeForce 8600 GT, 256MB, DDR3, PCIe-16, TV out, DVI, HDTV, SLI ready $148.39 www.ascent.co.nz ST Lab F-152, 3x Firewire External, 1x Firewire Internal, PCI, Retail $34.20 www.ascent.co.nz Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, for x86 (32-bit) systems, DVD, OEM $163.64http://www.ascent.co.nz//ProductSpec.aspx?itemID=351439 Total cost $1235 assembled. Is the E4700 a good choice? Also considered E2200 and E8200. For motherboard I'm considering the EP35-DS3P from Gigabyte or the Asus P5KR, or even the P5K-E/WIFI. With any of these I would drop the discrete Firewire card. Better half advises that case cannot be solid black, I thought that Raidmax one looks nice, not sure about PSU though. Anything I can save money on/anything that I'm skimping on? Thanks for taking the time to look and read, hope I got all the links right.:nerd: |
