658502 2008-04-14 09:01:00 Heat pumps are a good investment towards your house value which is (or isn't) a good idea these days. sal (67)
658503 2008-04-14 09:28:00 but I believe that they are very economic and use one third the energy of a normal 2 KW fan heater.

That is dependant on the ambient temperatures, the 1/3 figure is probably a best case estimate. The figures for Dunedin (or Taupo) in winter could be worse.

Edit: I've seen info that suggest that the pay for 1 get 3 claim is only valid for temps 10c and above. Ask your prospective installer a direct questions about your area.

658504 2008-04-14 09:38:00 Oh well I guess will have to wait and see what it's like in the very cold Taupo months. I hope it is better than the $200 + power bills I got before! lakewoodlady (103)
658505 2008-04-14 09:40:00 Have a search for previous extensive threads on this on PressF1. Heaps of information has been given in the past about the pros and cons and the different models and installation options. John H (8)
658506 2008-04-14 10:21:00 My mother used to have an oil column heater bubbling on low in the hallway of the old house she used to live in. It only just took an edge off the temp. I got a heat pump installed and the whole house was almost warm and yet she noticed very little difference in her power bill. mikebartnz (21)
658507 2008-04-14 15:48:00 We got a wall mounted one at home, awesome as! I cant give you which one we have until I get home, but it is great for temp and humidity control. rob_on_guitar (4196)
658508 2008-04-14 21:22:00 Our neighbours have one and the outside unit gives out a highpitched whine when it is running. It isn't even cold yet so it may be whining away all winter.
Spoke to a guy from ecan recently who said that the savings are actually not significant.
They don't work that well in powercuts either!

This becomes a problem when they become popular as they have in Ozz. In Melbourne after a certin time of the day they have to be turned off and the compressor isn't allowed to exceed a certain db level and the local council can make you remove it or relocate it if the neighbor complains..

658509 2008-04-14 22:07:00 My Daikin has a silent mode operation which lowers the outside units fan speed. Ideal for night time operations.

658510 2008-04-14 22:12:00 I'm not keen.

Depends what heating you used before. If electric, then yes I'd say the power bill wouldn't change much.

But a friend went from a woodburner to one and her power bill did go up. Heaps.
They might be better than convential electric heating but they sure aren't cheap.

658511 2008-04-14 22:18:00 They also act as a fan in summer which is a bonus. The noise from ours is only a hum (outside) which is rather quiet. Our power bill made no change. rob_on_guitar (4196)
