659457 2008-04-16 07:12:00 Ok here we go long time lurker very little poster - About a month ago i decided it was time to upgrade my tv as my old one was starting to act up - After alot of looking around and at prices and specials etc (i am not rich) i ended up buying a samsung plasma model number PS42Q91HX (of course the free 250 gig hdd dvd recorder helped with my decision), I am more than happy with the Tv i like the look of it and the way it works - On with my question this Tv is listed as HD Ready and i am am wondering if splurging out a little more (when i can save it up) for a blu-ray player is going to show the picture that i would like to see and that everybody talks about ie HD picture. Looking through the manual though has me a little confused there is a list of supported modes for HDMI/DVI and Component but the list to me is a little confusing - does the x = not supported and the O = supported ?? - if so if i plug a blu-ray player into this tv via hdmi am i going to see a decent picture change when viewing a movie ??

This is a pic i took from the manual

Oh yes!

I have a Viera Plasma TV, but i also got a DVD player that upscales SD to HD by duplicating the signal ouput.

With Blu-ray player you will of course need blu-ray media to see full HD, otherwise just get upscale dvd or freeview HD to see better picture!

659459 2008-04-16 07:30:00 yes i am toying with the idea of free view but not many progs are being broadcast in hd yet - the free recorder i got with the tv upscales to 1080i its model number HR755 - the other option i was looking at was saving even a little more and getting a ps3 which comes with the bonus of firmware upgrades as things move on. presso (10113)
659460 2008-04-16 07:50:00 Wait a little while and save up your money as the shops will be having "Olympic Games Deals" on all the HDTV,Blue Rays and HDMI stereos etc. as well. So you can "Watch The Games In All Their Glory"!! memphis (2869)
659461 2008-04-16 08:03:00 A Blu-ray player will give you a far better picture but I would be a little concerneed in buying one of the >$600 players being advetized at present as I suspect that they are only profile 1.0. No problem now but it 12 months they may not play movies or only the main movies and no extras.. paulw (1826)

At the moment, regardless of whether you play games, the PS3 is your best option in terms of BluRay. It's 2.0, as you say, firmware upgrades are easily available, it's a media centre, where you can stream networked content, and also (roughly speaking) a supercomputer... when joined into a cluster anyway.

I don't see how any other BluRay player sells, because as far as I'm concerned, the best deal is definitely right there.

Sony are releasing an HD-Tuner usb device for the PS3 shortly, rumor has it you will be able to record back to the PS3 and then again into your network
