658202 2008-04-12 10:07:00 Did any reader of The Southland Times last Thurs see anything odd about the pic on the front page of one of the Highlanders that had shot a stag. I couldnt help but notice that the rifle was not only pointing directly at his left hip, but also that the bolt on the rifle was in the closed position. Surely a rather bad breach of the firearm safety rules and also a bad example from a sporting icon and probably a hero to some.

rny.

658203 2008-04-12 10:26:00 If the rifle was unloaded, does it matter? Erayd (23)

Treat every firearm as if it were loaded.

658205 2008-04-12 23:17:00 If it was being pointed in your direction, wouldnt you rather see that the bolt was open and breach clear instead of taking it for granted that the user was doing the right thing? Many accidents have happened because someone "thought" the rifle was unloaded.

658206 2008-04-13 01:17:00 l2TOETS imo .

Treat every firearm as if it were loaded .

I too, was taught to treat every firearm as if it were loaded . We know how careful  many people are, so always assume there is one up the spout .

I was also taught that you DO NOT POINT A FIREARM AT ANYBODY!!!

Bletch: "If The rifle was unloaded . . . " How can you be certain?

Rny: So you are correct, the only way you can be certain, is if the bolt is open and the breech is clear . Anything else can only be considered loaded and deadly .

But bolt open and breech clear still does not mean that you are now permitted to point the firearm at anybody . You still treat it as loaded and deadly . An excuse after you have shot someone is no excuse .

So, I can only agree . Anyone, but particularly someone in that position, needs to display a good example at all times . You just never know how many impressionable minds are watching .

Possibly I would use a crossbow rather than a rifle.
Then again YMMV.

You have fun now your hear!!

658209 2008-04-17 07:53:00 The easy way to find out if it's unloaded is to pull the trigger. :banana Point it at the hunter first. Why shouldn't the deer's ghost get a laugh?:clap Graham L (2)
658210 2008-04-17 09:17:00 I nearly lost a leg through someone pulling the trigger on his so called unloaded shotgun. It was so close to my outer thigh it tore some of the threads of my trousers.
