661174 2008-04-22 04:26:00 National is promising to spend up to $1.5 billion on a nationwide fibre-optic network.

It says its Fibre to the Home policy will be worth $2.7 to $4.4 billion a year to New Zealand.

Leader John Key says the initial goal is to roll out the fibre to 75 percent of New Zealand homes. However in the first six years the priority will be given to business premises, schools and health facilities.

Mr Key says it will see download and uploads speeds many times faster than most New Zealanders have ever experienced.

My problem with this, is that they are not acknoledging home based businesses, which make up a bulk of small businesses in NZ. Also isn't the policy called 'The Fibre to the Home policy', but it isn't actually initially targeting homes? I imagine Kordia/Orcon will be carrying this out, which would make future government regualation on Telecom a definate conflict of interest.

661175 2008-04-22 04:27:00 Just heard that.

Still, we gotta wait at least 6 years more than likely.

I'd love to read the fine print.

End of last year he was saying National would not be getting involved at all in broadband.

When National win the election, I'm sure they'll find a reason why they suddenly can't do that.

Probably from tax, from all the businesses that are moving all their manufacturing offshore, and all the people who are migrating to Oz.

Apparently the "gift of the gab" served him very well in his past days in the financial markets in London .
