660931 2008-04-21 21:03:00 Announced here (forums.microsoft.com), what I would assume the last major service pack for Windows XP has gone RTM and will be publicly available 29 April. sal (67)
660932 2008-04-22 00:45:00 At which point, anyone worth their salt should be too busy playing GTA4 to care. And by that I mean... YAY!!! only another week until my GF wonders what she's got herself in for. Thebananamonkey (7741)

660937 2008-04-22 06:25:00 Whats all the fuss about that any one can read in some forms --- geeees, if the RC versions are any thing to go by and I have them on two PC's and noticed no changes at all, speeds the same, still get the occasional lock up, bugs still try to get in.:sleep

While service packs do contain some other components, its not like its suddenly going to completely change XP. From memory SP2 slowed down XP from SP1.

Some of the items will already be installed from the updates already available on MS update site.

660939 2008-04-22 06:51:00 Thanks for the link Zqwerty - as expected not a lot of improvements, the main ones listed on several sites, apart from the already available "Patches"

These new features include:

Network Access Protection compatibility. Announced years ago, this feature allows Windows XP machines to interact with the NAP feature in Windows Server 2008. This functionality is built into the RTM version of Windows Vista as well.

Product Key-less install option. As with Windows Vista, new XP with SP3 installs can proceed without entering a product key during Setup.

Kernel Mode Cryptographics Module. A new kernel module that "encapsulates several different cryptographic algorithms," according to Microsoft.

"Black hole" router detection algorithm. XP gains the ability to ignore network routers that incorrectly drop certain kinds of network packets. This, too, is a feature of Windows Vista.

And that's about it. Nothing dramatic, as promised. Apart from a few security fixes, the one that "Would be good" is the Product Key-less install option, BUT how good will it be considering as long as MS stick to what they say , XP will be discontinued later this year - time will tell I except.

Well it was going to be announced by someone sooner or later, this is a PC forum no less.
