660181 2008-04-19 09:02:00 Our Simpson dryer has finally given up the ghost after only seventeen years and nine months. They don't make them like they used to ! :D

Have been studying and looking around. Trying to decide
Consumer mag recommends must have capacity of at least 4.5 cub mtrs

Bosch using timer
Westinghouse with sensor
Simpson with timer

Theoretically sensor should be best though more likely to go wrong it seems and more expensive to fix. Looking at Google reviews they are a mixed bag with some saying sensors great and some saying they leave some clothes too wet.

Anyone give feedback on their experiences please ?

4.5 cubic metres! How big is your laundry???

Anyway - we've had an F&P sensor dryer for 10-12 years now & had exactly zero trouble with it. Seems pretty similar to their current offerings, so I guess its a design that's stood the test of time.

The trick with sensor dryers is to load them with clothes that will dry at roughly the same rate - otherwise I think they give up early, as the dryer air's humidity doesn't change as the water is reabsorbed by the thinner, drier clothes. It's also faster & better for your light clothes if you sort them a bit first.

Ooops ! Should have said - able to load 4.5 kgs of clothes.

Thanks for the info MushHead - very informative - better than the salespeople !

660184 2008-04-19 11:30:00 Consumer Magazine also rather famously recommended Thorn TV's - a slight lapse from sanity. 4.5 Cubic metres? Goodness, you could do your washing once a year. That would hold 4 1/2 tonnes of water, so maybe a bit over a half tonne of soggy clothes would be a reasonable load. That is a lot of socks. You might have to get the street wiring beefed up a bit to handle the load - and a mortgage broker on standby to buy the thing. R2x1 (4628)

Well various appliance repair guys have told me to avoid the first 2.

660186 2008-04-20 02:40:00 Thanks for your comments folks !

We have bought a Westinghouse combined sensor/timer model. We would have been very interested in a F & P but in the end it came down to supplier and price. The firm we dealt with (Vince Roberts) are very good and beat the others hands down, particularly for being up-front, friendly and knowledgeable.

Otherwise we would very happily have taken MushHead's advice re F & P on board. Anyway his soothing words re sensors re-assured us.

Interestingly enough pctek, the appliance repair guys must have good reasons, however both Simpson and Westinghouse are now made in the same factory in Orange, New South Wales. They have the same features for some or all models and just different face-plates. Of course, this may well be a recent development - I don't know. So nowadays the comments that apply to either Westinghouse or Simpson must apply equally to both.
Thanks again
Misty :D :D

So very true, I have had to replace our dryer about 2 years ago, The one we did have was originally a wedding present for my parents, It was a grand old age of 34 freakin years, and still going strong, The main bearing had failed years ago and she made a sound somewhere between rolling thunder and cars crashing but she sure cooked the hell out of the clothes.
