660020 2008-04-18 20:54:00 Just read this in the Herald. Seems the latest policy for NZ manufacturers is to export to where it can get higher prices. When they run out of buyers overseas they will condescend to sell to us. At the overseas price, of course.
"That's what they sell for overseas"

"they will not be available for sale to the general public in New Zealand.

"At this stage, all our Scuba Scutas and are destined for large export orders."

Seems to me the ridiculous prices we pay here are caused by NZ manufacturers exporting their products to push up the price they can charge here.

660021 2008-04-18 23:38:00 I think you're absolutely right.

I find Air New Zealand to be a rip off.

London-Auckland-London is often considerably cheaper than Auckland-London-Auckland.

Same flights. Same journey (just in reverse). Yet we get fleeced.

660022 2008-04-18 23:49:00 Well the buy NZ products push came 15 years too late, as always, we will just keep leaving for overseas until all that are left in NZ are foreigners. rob_on_guitar (4196)
660023 2008-04-18 23:57:00 **** NZ.

Hand control over to idiots and you end up with a mess.

NZ only has itself to blame, I'm declaring independence....Just for my house.

When some "Non-Idiotic" people stand for Government I'll re-evaluate my position.

It just shows how much the culture in NZ has changed, and now NZ companies are solely looking at the bottom line over the welfare of NZers .

I heard a disgusting story that one NZ company had disconnected it's phones because it didn't want to have to deal with NZ enquiries, as it only wanted to sell offshore where it can make the most money .

It used to be the case where real NZ companies created a product, because they saw a need for it in the community . They made a profit on it, sure, but they weren't purely profit driven, like these 2008 companies seem to be . They had a social concience .

This is where these companies such as F&P could learn from Peter Jackson, he brings work to NZ, even though he could probably get it done cheaper in other countries . King kong ddin't need NZs scenery, and could have been shot in Mexico at a fraction of the price . He wants NZers to share in the wealth .

660026 2008-04-19 01:51:00 They ran the Buy NZ made stuff campaign years ago and everything had a little NZ Made sticker on it showing it was made here, but it did not last as other cheaper products were outselling the local ones.

India had a Be Indian Buy Indian campaign years ago and very little stuff was imported it was almost the failure of India, the stuff that was made there at the time was mainly crap and failed frequently. At least they saw the light and started to westernise and allow imports.

It has to be an even mix of local and imported as one can't sustain a country without the other.

660027 2008-04-19 02:33:00 I still think its a good idea to buy Steinlager made here rather than Heineken brewed in Australia. Griffins biscuits, rather than Arnotts etc etc As it saves our overseas funds.

That is the whole point really we need to export more and import less.

......

judging by some comments in other threads they are not always higher priced overseas.
often its the scale, NZ is such a small market. for a lot of goods they simply cannot sell enough here. but overseas buyers are not interested in small orders. for a company here they can be flat out supplying one city overseas. they simply cannot spare the product due to the overseas demand. add to that high demand also tends to increase the price.

the other thing is NZ is often looked apon as a profit market, eg they sell most product overseas at competive prices which pays the bills but NZ is priced to earn all the profit.
