I've installed windows 7 on my computer and I want to delete the XP partition
and so that windows XP is removed from the computer and Xp'd "c" partition will be deleted to make a bigger patition. How can I delete xp with windows 7?

When I right click it the partition in windows 7 and press format, it said " windows was unable to format this drive." When I try it in computer management(right click the partition) , the delete option is greyed out, how can I delete it?

Finally happy with Vista, and want to remove the old XP from your system? A few changes to the boot loader have been made in vista, but the steps are very similar.

not too difficult, simply load into Vista and format the partition XP is currently installed on. Since the Vista bootloader has control of the boot, there is no need to modify the boot.ini of XP.

Restart your computer with either Vista CD 1 or your Vista DVD in the drive, if you don't you will be prompted to pick an operating system. Once into setup, choose repair console from the first screen (not install).

Now the last option is for a DOS prompt, pick that.

A DOS prompt appears, and type the following:
bootrec.exe /fixmbr
*this will essentially remove XP from the Vista bootloader

bootrec.exe /fixboot
*this will check that XP is no longer present in Vista's boot.ini

Restart and XP is history. 		minster (9180)

The reason it is greyed out is because Windows' knows that it contains important system files, and therefore does not allow you to delete it.

Download Gparted (gparted.sourceforge.net) or boot from any old linux CD and format from there.

Once that is done you can remove the XP entry by opening up msconfig in 7 or by following the second half of Ministers post.

799678 2009-08-12 21:00:00 I burnt the ISO of Gparted on to a bootable CD using Burnaware free, but the win7 computer spun the disc around a few times and went into the boot menu. I've checked the BIOS and CD-Drive is the first boot device. I tried the CD on my regular computer and it only spun the CD for a few seconds but usually spins a disk for quite a while even if it isn't a bootable disk. Can anybody give me a hand on this?
