799292 2009-08-08 04:45:00 We shut down our laptop this morning as normal this morning before going out, though often we just leave it on.

When we did the usual startup got the blue screen saying Unmountable_Boot_Volume. Said to perhaps take out any new hardware/software - but there has been none (except addition of AZZ Cardfile as couple of days ago). It also suggested re-start and press F8 and chose Safe Mode. Tried this and whatever I chose - "Safe Mode", "Last known good configuration" or "Start Normally" -- all lead back to the Blue Screen.

It also says Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing

It has worried me for the last year or two that I cannot remember getting or can find any discs that we got with the laptop. It is a re-furbished laptop from Harvey Norman and has been really very good so far.

The Blue Screen error message says

***STOP: 0X000000ED (0X8A726368, 0XC0000006, 0X00000000, 0X00000000).

The OS is XP Professional.

:help: :(

Hi Speedy
No, it doesn't show the name of any file under the stop error - or anywhere on the blue screen .

It is Service Pack 3

Hi pctek
Unfortunately as I said earlier I did not get, or cannot find the Windows CD. It was a Harvey Norman refurbishment and in the hurly-burly I did not seem to have been given one. I should have been sharper, or more wide awake - I know !! :o

Am bound to have a recovery disc for the PC although that is XP Home, and the laptop is XP Professional - would that work ??

Yes. All you need is cmd or a utility that can perform a chkdsk

Or, you can use this tiny 7mb iso:
www.thecomputerparamedic.com

Burn it to a CD, then hit R at the first prompt.

Then do a chkdsk /r

95% chance it'll fix it;)

Hi Blam
I have burned it to a CD (on our PC).

Then have put the CD into the CD drive on the laptop, trying three different ways
(1) when the blue screen is showing
(2) when booting
(3) when the choice screen is showing (ie Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Command Prompt, etc)

I thought the last (Safe Mode with Command Prompt) would be most likely.
However in none does the prompt occur. Is there another key or thing I should be doing on booting perhaps. How do I get the prompt please ?

Reading the CD does show that the file is rc.iso, so that part seems fine !

799300 2009-08-08 08:49:00 Have you tried the links I posted?
Hi Speedy
The first seems to refer for situations when you are upgrading to XP. I am not upgrading however, Windows XP (Professional) has been there all the time.

The second link says amongst other things

chkdsk /r command from Recovery Console, and then continue.

However am I right in saying that you need the disc that is supposed to come with the computer to be able to access the Recovery Console ?

799301 2009-08-08 08:50:00 Did you burn rc.iso to cd (with something like imgburn / poweriso), so it extracts whats in the ISO? Not just burn the iso as is to the cd? Speedy Gonzales (78)
