| 661214 | 2008-04-23 05:04:00 | Apparently there is discussion going on about sub-loop unbundling (i.e. unbundling cabinets). Telecom's proposal currently allocates 40% of the total space of each cabinet for competitors to install their own equipment, though there is nothing in regulation as such yet. Plus telecom announced they were going to do this well before they were unbundled. I read even Xnet/world exchange was reported to be critising other ISPs, for complaining about telecoms plans for cabinetisation, due to them already knowing about it. One problem is the government and policies move so slowly, yet technology changes rapidly, so policies are always playing catchup. |

If telecom gets its greedy little hands on it... shuddershudder 2.5% of telecom is currently government owned through it's departments, and at least 40% is owned by mum and dad shareholders, either directly, or on behalf of financial institutions. Profits made by telecom are then paid out to these shareholders. Shareholders take the risk in investing, and rightly get the profits the company makes. I am just wondering what you mean by greedy telecom? I would agree that when telecom was sold to the Americans, they were greedy, as they then sold it back onto the public sharemarket for a huge profit, who were effectively the people who paid for setting up telecom in the first place. What makes telecom so different from Telstra in Australia? |

Maybe the Unbundling concept should have started on the cabinetised situation first. Unbundling has been a freight train bearing down on Telecom for years, long before it happened. God I remember it being talked about around 2002 or even further back long before DSL2, thats one HELL of a long term road map they had lol. No sale for me sorry :) |

Didn't labour promise tax cuts at the next election, and at the last budget? Apparently these are now not going to occur until after the election. Personally I would for go the small tax cuts and have this money spent on a fibre optic network. |

| 661218 | 2008-04-23 05:39:00 | i think it would be good for govt to start another SOE that runs the new highspeed system. then telecom can pay to get access to it, over the years the govt recover the cost of setup and then make a profit which can be put back in to the system to keep it upto date. the other choice is that govt give the $$ to telecom and they get ot make a big profit from govt investment. govt never see the $$ again and telecom don't provide half what the promise. |

Haven't your heard of Korida/Orcon, as they are the Government owned telecommunications company. The government can easily regulate the market to give Kordia market dominance, and shut out the competitors. |
