660961 2008-04-24 08:22:00 Not to sure, I just looked and it has the same KB number as RC2 AND I just finished slipstreaming SP3 from the site provided onto a new XP CD, it installed fine, no product key, keeps coming up saying 30 days to activate, if you try to do any windows updates, it wants to check to make sure its legal, then says its not genuine and promptly jumps you to the site where you are adviced to purchase XP for $171.00

SO going by that, I think I'll wait for the Official download from MS and try again, in the mean time I got a nice new coaster it seems :crying

And to add insult - IE7 Will NOT install, since its not included in the SP3, and even after adding in a product key , windows update still didn't show IE7 as a download, while all other XP SP2's did - even with the key , IE7 still spat the dummy.

if it is the " real deal' - Looks like MS F**ked up again.

Did you slipstream straight into XP or a CD with SP2 already on it? and what program did you use?

I heard if you slipstream onto a cd without any SP already it can have problems...

For those "early adaptors" of SP3, also be aware that the address bar has been removed as a toolbar option for the taskbar. I just noticed this being mentioned in forums and apparently this wasn't the case with the beta/RC versions.

I never used it but I'm sure there's a few that do.

Who the hell would want an address bar using up all the space on their taskbar?

660962 2008-04-24 08:30:00 Did you slipstream straight into XP or a CD with SP2 already on it? and what program did you use?I made a complete new Slipstream CD - All original / source files were copied to a folder on the machine from a Nice shiny genuine Windows XP Home SP2 CD.

The actual install went perfectly, didn't require a product key, all drivers installed as expected - then went to windows update and it went :yuck: :groan: "Sorry sunshine" (the rest is above)

Are you slipstreaming SP3 to XP on a Vista system? This is apparently a no-no, similar to slipstreaming SP1 to Vista using a XP system, not a good idea.

660964 2008-04-24 09:08:00 I tied slipstreaming SP3 on a Vista PC and nLite "stopped working" (aka vista incompatibilities )

Also, you can't install sp3 on a "vanilla" XP installation. (www.imagef1.net.nz) Needs at least SP1

660965 2008-04-24 09:09:00 Hmm yup worked fine here after I slipstreamed SP3.

I just copied the XP cd to the hdd, slipstreamed SP3, IE 7, WMP 11, and 1 WMP update.

I did put the key in, during the install that was fine.

Waited for XP to install, on the spare hdd, then went to the WU site.

Everything is up to date (besides that Malicious tool), but I dont plan on installing this.

You can use Nlite to SS. Its fine if you slipstream SP3 to a CD.There are no probs. Altho, SP2 was previously slipstreamed on this CD as well.

Dont know if that'll make any diff.

Nope - it was done on a XP SP2 Machine, the only thing I slipstreamed in was the Service pack. May try again tomorrow and this time include IE7 & WMP. That still wont get around the Install with No product key if MS throughs up a barrier before allowing updates, unlike Vista which does allow every thing to update/patch etc.

Theres a BIG BUT Though - if a person buys a XP SP3 Genuine CD assuming they become available before MS stops them being available (last I heard was june this year) then If theres a problem loading IE7 or WMP thats not good ---- patch time again I guess :)

I dont think SP3 includes IE 7 or WMP 11 lol.

Pretty stupid, since I'm pretty sure SP3 has the updates for both.

You can slipstream IE 7 tho (Get the NON-WGA version off the MS site), and use Nlite. Add it under hotfixes.

Because after I SS IE 7, there were no more updates on the WU site.

And after I SS WMP 11, there was only 1 update for it (941569)

So, all I did was copy the cd to hdd, SS SP3, IE 7, WMP 11, and 941569, and the rootsupdate file.

That was it, the only things left on the WU site were drivers, and Net Framework 1.1 and 2

660968 2008-04-24 09:31:00 MS could do what they did with Vista and put a "dummy" key that sits in the place an entered key would go when XP is installed with no product key, rather than just having the product key field essentially blank.

If a product key field was blank on any OS, including XP, I suspect WU would automatically see it as a pirate installation and thus block updates.

660969 2008-04-24 09:36:00 Then of course we have this link:-

Some developers appear to be a little annoyed. This because they pay.

660970 2008-04-24 09:49:00 Remaking the Slipstream right now this time with IE7 and WMP as well - 8.50pm, ( the Mrs has ER on TV - guess where I'm heading :D ) so I'll reinstall and see what happens.

What I have read in several places was If you didn't have IE7 installed, windows update offered it as a download on SP2, but as soon as SP3 was installed the IE7 Download disappeared---- Strange, maybe MS are getting ready for IE8 ?
