Or maybe that's a good idea - if they sign a contract that binds them to work as doctors in NZ, and after 10 years they are entitled to their loan back. What I was meaning was, that as long as they stayed and worked in NZ public hospitals, their loan was locked, so they neither had to pay interest, or pay off the principle. Then after 10 years, the whole thing is wiped. It is effectively a pay rise, as they don't have to put money into paying off their loan. The government needs to address these problems quickly, they just take too long to do anything, and in the meantime we are losing too much of our talent. |

After 10 years they are likely to have settled with a young family, so are more likely to remain in NZ. They also don't have to pay the interest if they work in NZ, but that policy isn't working, as more people are leaving to go to Oz than ever. I think that is a good idea. It sort of bonds them to New Zealand. But Doctors only. |

They are probably too busy working 14hr days anyway to watch the news and find out. By doing this then the DHB will be closer to their demands. The jnr doctors will be happy because they have achieved their goal. The public will be happy because we have more money in our pockets as well and everyone knows that people dont get sick if you're happy. Therefore the jnr doctors will be happy because of less workload for more money, and the DHB look good because they have managed to stem the exodus of doctors abroad. :banana |

| 660766 | 2008-04-21 23:20:00 | big bloody deal, lots of people work those sorts of hours, People that run their own business, take a 8-10 hour day, then add in the after hours for doing paper work. 6 weeks a year off - HA! Lets see - I run my own business, 12 -14 hour days is normal Monday - Thursday, Friday is 9 hours, people calling every day of the week , meaning saturday & Sunday any where up to 11.00 pm - AND people still try to get things or work done for nothing, or are wanting discounts. I couldn't afford to take off 6 weeks - Lucky if I get 2 weeks off a year -:groan: Are you missing that these people who do 14+ hours a day actually have your life in their hands? Bloody sure I'd want my doctor well rested thank-you! |

| 660767 | 2008-04-21 23:31:00 | Are you missing that these people who do 14+ hours a day actually have your life in their hands? Oh please. Doctors do not very often have your life in their hands - and on the rare occasion that they do, their practice will proceed conservatively. Not only that, but no doctor practices in isolation - they are all part of a medical team. This melodramatic idea that one doctor's slip could kill somebody doesn't really bear close inspection. |

And 14+ hours? What about the rest? Doctors can be on call for days at a time, in which time they have to be able to drop everything to be able to come to work. The way I see it, they're being peid to put their life on hold. Also, who's telling the self employed to work 14+ a day? They are. Who's telling the doctors? The sick and dying. At the end of the day, you can sell your business, and the worst that will happen is a Nigerian scammer gets richer. If they do, people can die. |

If you want a cruisy job, stick to packing supermarket shelves or something similar . You would think that someone smart enough to become a doctor is also smart enough to investigate exactly what sort of occupation/lifestyle they are buying into . At $88,000 a year I would say that they are the highest paid apprentices in the country, why anybody who cannot diagnose a simple cold without help from a real doctor deserves a 30% pay rise is beyond me . $115,000 a year is a ludicrous sum to pay someone who is basically a glorified nurse . . . . . Veale I was considering becoming a doctor myself . However the lifestyle(basically it becomes your life)and the potential stress of it made me turn off it . At uni we were told that if we want to make lots of money, to go to law school . It is a supply and demand thing too, there is a lack of doctors (especially GPs) in NZ, so if we want them, we have to pay for them . Most of the GPs around where I live are either south african or asian . This isn't a bad thing, as they are good doctors, and the only NZ ones are older doctors . It does make you wonder what it is going to take to get young NZ doctors to work as a GP |
