Salary - $88,000
Leave - 6 weeks per annum

and so on.

Screw 'em.

$88,000 is a pretty good salary for NZ. But I say pay them what they are asking, it will work out as the best solution in the long term.
It would cost more to import doctors and train them up. Another thing we could do, is not train doctors at all in NZ, and put the money we are currently paying, to buy up doctors from India and other low wage countries.
Cunliffes thinks he is god, because he managed to unbundle telecom, but he is making a big mess of the health system and he seems to be taking it so personally, which could end up costing peoples lives. If he doesn't sort it out, he will also never have a chance to become labours next leader.

I say wipe doctors loans if they stay in NZ for more than 10 years. After 10 years they are likely to have settled with a young family, so are more likely to remain in NZ. They also don't have to pay the interest if they work in NZ, but that policy isn't working, as more people are leaving to go to Oz than ever.

Deane - when I had a major surgery a few years ago and was in at Auckland Public Hospital, I was amazed to see the same doctors (young ones - I assume they are the "Junior Doctors" being discussed here) who were doing 'pre-rounds' at 7 . 30 in the morning, still working the wards at 9 . 30pm the same day .

These guys are young and inexperienced (relatively-speaking), but 14+ hours a day, for a week at a time!!! :groan: :groan:

That income when worked out as an hourly rate is pathetic for the hours they do . And they well deserve the six weeks holiday they get!!

As qazwsxokmijn says, there are far better places to spend tax dollars than on career criminals!

Yeah yeah - the regime for junior doctors has been the same for a long time - but their hours are limited these days compared to what they once were.

They well deserve six weeks holiday a year? Why? Because they're doctors?

They get money, status and power. Why the hell does that mean that they deserve six weeks paid leave a year?

Don't you think by 10 years they'd have paid off their loan?

Or maybe that's a good idea - if they sign a contract that binds them to work as doctors in NZ, and after 10 years they are entitled to their loan back.

big bloody deal, lots of people work those sorts of hours, People that run their own business, take a 8-10 hour day, then add in the after hours for doing paper work.

6 weeks a year off - HA!

Lets see - I run my own business, 12 -14 hour days is normal Monday - Thursday, Friday is 9 hours, people calling every day of the week , meaning saturday & Sunday any where up to 11.00 pm - AND people still try to get things or work done for nothing, or are wanting discounts.

I couldn't afford to take off 6 weeks - Lucky if I get 2 weeks off a year -:groan:

They get money, status and power. Why the hell does that mean that they deserve six weeks paid leave a year? For the sole reason that anyone working those sorts of hours NEEDS a decent break! The fact that they're doctors doesn't swing any extra weight with me - they only get the "status and power" that you accord them. I certainly don't see them as anything but hard workers - that's what gets my attention and respect, I don't care what sector of the workforce they're in.

I agree - time off is a luxury and the hours can be horrendous (if you don't keep a handle on things) . But I'm relatively well-paid (compared to perms doing the same thing) and enjoy the ability to tell a client "Sorry, I'm not available for that weekend (or that week)" and just go skiing (for instance) . You can't do that as a perm . But getting back to the doctors - comparing against what we do (in IT) - it's not the same . Y+They work 14+ hours a day and every one of their decisions can have a life or death outcome (OK, I know they're supervised) . If a HDD you install for Joe Bloggs stops working, at least you have a redo option . . .

660760 2008-04-21 11:38:00 Thats more of a doctor, these are junior doctors, isnt it taking away incentive to better themselves if your just going to give them everything they want straight away?? rob_on_guitar (4196)
