799492 2009-08-09 05:56:00 Hey Speedy

Do you think the warranty will cover this? (Not holding you to anything)

Does anyone else reading this think it will? CS, Gary, Blam, PC Tech etc
tuiruru (12277)
799493 2009-08-09 06:23:00 The Warranty ONLY covers hardware.

What they usually say is do a reinstall of the OS / Run recovery disc's , take it back to factory default - then if its still playing up send it in.

Unless of course its obvious hardware problem.

799494 2009-08-09 06:55:00 Hi Blam 6
I've tried what you've asked.
START>REPAIR COMPUTER>SELECT A KEYBOARD LAYOUT ..............ends up with "Startup repair cannot repair this system automayically". So i look at "View diagnostic and repair details" I can see the log and highlight everything and CTRL C it, but there's nowhere to paste it to cos I'm in safe Mode with Networking plus inside all the diagnostic stuff

Thanks for your help so far but where to next?

You should be able to copy it and paste it into notepad, which you can open by typing notepad.exe in command prompt and hitting enter.

From there save it to a location on your HD.

799495 2009-08-09 08:44:00 All this trouble because the manufacturer is too tight fisted to supply an operating system disc. They reckon it's for convenience. This thread proves otherwise. Phil B (648)
799496 2009-08-10 05:31:00 HI Folks

Looks like the primary hard drive has snuffed it - now won't even boot into safe mode and apart from a couple of initial clunks the hard drive activity indicator light doesn't even come on.

Phoned DSE who gave me the Toshiba phone number, who gave me the address of the relevant page on their Aussie website so I could find the nearest "accredited service agent" (They're trying to tell me it's an OS problem). The phone number it came up with put me straight thru to the Main Telecom Switchboard which neither of us could understand why, but I went back to the Toshiba Site and got the website address of the recommended "local" company ( Gen-i -anyone got any feedback on them) which gave me a phone number that worked. Now I just have to send it back and wait with baited breath....

Many Thanks for your input

799497 2009-08-10 06:01:00 Some places Gen-i is owned by Telecom or like the Nelson branch a franchise from Telecom. Never used them but do know the Nelson one lost about half it's staff who set up a rival company here called Blueberry IT. Never used Gen-i did try and get a job with them but turned down. They manage my mates companies PC's I wasn't too impressed with what they did to his work lappie but as I said they are a franchise here and so no reflection of what other branches are like gary67 (56)
799498 2009-08-10 06:55:00 Errrrr where did you learn / told you that -- Cripes the hundreds of XP PC's I have run repair installs on when they wont boot must have been " lucky" then eh! :p

There has been the odd time when a repair install doesn't work - weather it fixes the problem is another matter.
There are several tools available that also work on Vista Now - where they didn't before. Just repaired a unbootale Vista the other day with them - where the standard 'repair" of Vista Failed.

I was implying that you could not do a repair install on Vista(like the one in XP) if the system was not bootable..

You got ERD 5 and 6?

You lucky guy, I've used it once or twice but don't own it:(

Apparently you require a subscription or something..:o

799501 2009-08-10 10:02:00 yeah I came across it by chance - Via technet , Part of the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack.

One of the kewlest tools in the MDOP pack is ERD Commander. It is a product that gives us low level access to the OS to bring about repairs or changes to get things working when things break.

It was also quite expensive prior to Microsoft's acquiring of Winternals Cant remember how much it was now ( 5) , but it wan't cheap
