660637 2008-04-20 14:26:00 I have a 2 year old samsung tv which is 1080i compliant.

Here's a link to the manual

downloadcenter.samsung.com

From the link, can someone confirm if i can receive the HD signal? I have both a sky dish and a uhf aerial (excellent reception). It has component video input at the rear.

What's best, uhf or via the sky dish? Im keen to check out HD so was looking at going the uhf way.

Can you tune into these channels without a freeview receiver?

Edit: Just walked up to the tv and it says "HDTV 1080i HD Ready" so from that, im fine?

Read some forums which talk about TV's that were marketed as HD ready, arent in reality? Im hoping my tv doesnt fall into that category. Or does the tv have to have an HDMI input??

Someone help clarify thanks :)

660638 2008-04-20 17:09:00 UHF for Freeview HDTV is the only sensible choice.

You can't tune in anything unless you have the STB for it.

HD Ready is a con.. can mean a lot of things. The set might accept a 1080i signal but downscale it. I didn't look at your manual link.

If it doesn't have an HDMI conection you won't be watching any real HDTV anyway.

660639 2008-04-20 21:32:00 I am in the same boat as you Term X with a Samsung Slimfit TV ,but there is a solution on the Freeviewshop site forum www.freeviewshop.co.nz ,what is needed is this www.freeviewshop.co.nz , via satellite dish , this unit can upscale to 1080i Lawrence (2987)
660640 2008-04-21 08:05:00 Upscaling standard def to 1080i isn't going to gain you anything. The Digital terrestrial pic is better to begin with. apsattv (7406)

As stated, UHF is the only way to view FreeviewHD: the satellite version is incapable of decoding the HD format. You're options are a HTPC using a DVB-T tuner card(s) or a STB. Might pay to wait for the Freeview boxes with built-in hard-drive recorder.

What is the native resolution of you're TV? if it's less than 1280x760(8) then it won't truly be high-def. With true resolution HDTVs, the 780p signal (1280x760 progressive) will upscale to 1080i (1980x1080 interlaced).

If the TV has some obscure native res of, say, 852x708 then the TV's scaler will be be forced to compromise. The more a signal is upscaled, the more artifacts will be introduced onto the screen. The saying goes, "crap in, crap out."

If you're manual states the TV is the above res, then you're in business: otherwise, I'm afraid you were conned by the salesman who probably didn't even understand the difference. You won't be alone, if that is the case.

660642 2008-04-21 11:08:00 As the TV doesn't have an HDMI input you won't get HD TV.
The Freeview STBs will only output HD via the HDMI socket and only on UHF not satellite.

I wasn't aware of that as I've gone the HTPC route. Cheers.

660644 2008-04-21 12:12:00 hey gkar

the manual states "the component in connectors are used for equipment with a dvd or dtv receiver output (480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, 1080i)

okay so with a freeviewHD receiver i should have HD on my tv? even though it doesnt have an HDMI input? will the freeview HD uhf receiver also send a HD signal through the component out?

man.. this is all confusing.. ill get there!

Apparently not as Freeview have enabled HDCP on their HD broadcasts which requires HDMI .

The component outputs on the Freeview|HD STB will only output at 576p
