662812 2008-04-26 08:00:00 A poll out today by Fairfax-Neilson says that 10% of New Zealanders are considering leaving New Zealand.

I think that figure is far too low !

I also think that it is a great shame that so many kiwis want to or have left New Zealand and it is an indictment on our pathetic governments over the last 50 years.

How can Helen Clark et al sleep at night knowing that half the population would leave NZ if they could.

662813 2008-04-26 08:02:00 DOn't worry it the same the world over, I left the UK for NZ and at least 50% of Brits would leave if they had the guts to do so. gary67 (56)

Shes a Frauline and apparently Frauline are ALWAYS right which means every decision that the Labour Regierung has made since it has been in charge is the "right" decision for all New Zealanders.

Ever considered trying for promotion to a Lemming? It is a big jump, in all senses of the word, but we would support you (nearly) every step of the way.

662818 2008-04-27 02:28:00 I would leave if i could. We are planning it for end of next year though, baby will still be young and the girl would have graduated. NZ just doesnt add up no more. rob_on_guitar (4196)

It has become about as expensive here as it is in the UK without the benefits of being close to our major markets. Even those ads for "buy NZ made" are not relevant since NOTHING "NZ Made" is actually made in NZ - except for dairy products which are then sold to Europe and greatly inflated prices that we can't afford.

We barely even qualify for science and tech research and the companies that do research here tend to move off shore to be closer to their markets and greater pools of talented labour.

Half the population is not 10%.
Considering is not doing...
I know several people that have left to go to Australia and have come back. I know several who have left and stayed in Australia. As i see it only 50% of them stay away (sorry very small sample used). I know a lot of Australia that have moved here to stay and are still here (curse it).
Besides, we can fill up there places with Chinese now, so no problem.

I am sure a lot more have thought about leaving, even if they haven't closely considered it. Certainly there is a lot of negativity in NZ at the moment, as we appear to have now come to the end of the economic cycle. A change in government may help, but I think NZ has quite a few tough years to come. The thing that is stopping many NZers leaving NZ , is trying to get a good price for their house. Many may end up making a substaintial loss on it, simply to get rid of it, but that will only be a short term loss, as they would be able to make more in Oz.

Australias economic situtation however isn't really that much better than NZs. They have a major inflation problem in Oz, and their interest rates could end up going up even higher than ours, in an attempt to control inflation.
