662463 2008-04-25 04:45:00 Windows XP could yet be reprieved from end-of-life, if enough customers demand it (www.theregister.co.uk), said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer today.

Speaking at a news conference in Belgium Ballmer said: "XP will hit an end-of-life. We have announced one. If customer feedback varies we can always wake up smarter but right now we have a plan for end-of-life for new XP shipments", reports Reuters.

662464 2008-04-25 06:18:00 Well I clicked on your link and read the whole story from The Register.

Toward the end you will note that the author goes on to talk about SP1 for Vista. "But the rest of the world’s computers won’t “begin experiencing the benefits” of Vista SP1 until mid-May"
This sort of reporting is presumably not factual as such in my opinion as remarks can or may be taken out of context.

I have recently installed Vista Ultimate 64 bit along with Office 2007 Pro.
I also installed Vista SP1. This within this month therefore I am not yet qualified to answer all Vista/Office queries.

Personally I like the interface(s) and I am just getting on with doing what I do. OK. A bit of a learning curve and at this stage I think I will get a new TV Tuner card.

This is not meant to shoot you down it is just I read through the link you posted and the reporting seems to be selective at best.

662465 2008-04-25 06:46:00 Personally, I think Vista is not that bad for performance/eye candy etc compromises as some others make out. I don't like it's compatibility though. Some games will just NOT run. No explanation why from the OS; they just WONT.

Vista Home Premium runs well on my PC (specs below) but I dual boot with XP for games and if I need to do something very resource-intensive :D

And I do think XP should stay on sale until at least next year.

Just my opinions :)

Quite frankly, and I having NO experience with Vista, I didn't find much to argue about in the article . . but that's just my eye-pinion .

Where there's smoke . . . and all . . . but I still see and hear of a lot of people who are somewhat disappointed with the newest child of M$ .

I don't want to upgrade to much higher hardware as seems to be required for it's (Vista's) operation . . . but then again that's just me speaking .

The run-of-the-mill XP-P is OK with me . . and I fail to see what all the clamour and hoopla is all about in the Vista camp .

I am not a gamer, and maybe . . . JUST MAYBE . . . that is the whole crux of the situation .

The video performance and digital storage of the files/vids/MP3s and such that I have run just fine in the crippled XP . . to hear people talk about my dinosaur .

At least I am not making a case to go retro all the way back to 98 or 95 .

. . . and as everyone knows . . . I have not had much work for me in "L-based" systems either .

Someday I might dabble in Vista or another L system . . but then again, I am getting old and crotchety and a little long in the tooth to want to punish myself that much .

Thanks for your comment . . but alas, I am just the bearer, not the instigator .
