So it is not alright to take the GST off grocery items but it is off fuel?:illogical As for replacing RUC with a fuel tax that is a dumb idea because so many people and businesses use diesel for non road use. |

INstead of just reducing the taxes we pay to then in the 1st place, they create more bureaucracy so we have to apply to get a refund back..... Labour, creating jobs for nothing.... |

Also if it is an emergency, you can go to the hospital for free, and in general hospital care is free (tax payer funded). However if you go for private health insurance, you are paying twice. The fact remains,we pay GST(tax) to see doc. If we have our hip replaced we will pay tax on that too. Never mind about private this and that. |

This happens all the time, I pay tax on my income and if I employ a builder on my house, he pays income tax again on the money I pay him. |

This happens all the time, I pay tax on my income and if I employ a builder on my house, he pays income tax again on the money I pay him. That is not the same thing at all, as with a builder you are getting a direct service. What you are describing is the normal cycle, where each time a transaction takes place, the government takes their cut. Rates are a local tax. You also pay tax on your income to pay your local rates/taxes, and then you pay GST on this. . The GST on local rates is similar to GST petrol, were you pay GST on the exise tax, both go to the government, so they are taking two clips of the ticket from the same transaction. |

It is envied by tax policy people in other countries because we do not have exceptions. Very easy to calculate and deduct. Nobody likes tax but since we have to pay it one way or another, please accept that the NZ GST system works. The only change I'd like to see is with Rob's point - GST on rates should be reurned to the local authorities. In fact this was promised by Labour at the time but then David Lange had his cup of tea and the rest is history..... |
