662786 2008-05-05 03:47:00 Hi all,

Well my Canon PowerShot A70 died (www.imagef1.net.nz) yesterday. The LCD display just shows the pink/purple stripy pattern both in live views and any photos taken. Older photos viewed on the the LCD screen look normal, so I guess the electronic CCD thingy is stuffed. :crying

Yes, it looks like your camera has this problem:

Canon's Response:
Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will repair, free of charge, the products listed above exhibiting the above-mentioned malfunction if Canon determines that the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor. Canon will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in connection with this repair.

Sorry to have posted too lately, but still it'd be worth your while to see whether Canon NZ will fix your Powershot for free.

I wonder what Canon NZ will do about it? I will contact Canon NZ support with a link to the article and see what they say.

My camera certainly hasn't been dropped, but it hasn't been operating in a humid area either, so who knows ...

Canon NZ won't need any prompting, they are very familiar with this problem. Unlike Sony who actually made the CCD, Canon haven't put a time limit on warranty claims for this issue. The reference to humidity is a red herring AFAIK the fault seems to affect all of them eventually.

662790 2008-05-06 01:01:00 Talking of wide angle,I am taken buy the panoramic feature of the S1000fd,you simply take 3 pics and it auto joins them up,now that is wide angle. Cicero (40)
662791 2008-05-06 06:14:00 I'm interested in what their response is.I got a prompt email from them this morning saying that it does indeed look like a CCD fault and they will fix it free of charge if this is the case. :)

The camera is about 5 years old, so well and truly out of warrantee.

Talk about great service.

662792 2008-05-07 10:11:00 Hey Jen
I've just bought a TZ15 ot TZ5 as it's known in USA. Got my bro-in-law to buy it from States for NZ$355. I have also bought a spare battery via Ebay form someone in. Came with a main charger and a connection for a 12v car socket. Arrived in 7 days and cost NZ$34

662793 2008-05-08 08:28:00 It's important to be careful when buying camera batteries from non-OEM sources as there are many fakes and duds out there. Amazon.com seems to sell them much cheaper than NZ retailers do. :2cents: GoodHour (12218)
662794 2008-12-16 23:30:00 The lack of view finder may be a problem, but to be honest, I rarely ever used a view finder on the old Canon and the TZ3 has a setting for adding more oomph (brightness) to the LCD if you are finding it difficult to view the image.

So how have you found the lack of viewfinder, Jen? Have you had any problems seeing your subject on the LCD screen due to brightness?

I am assuming that Auckland has had one or two sunny days for you to try it out? :p

662795 2008-12-17 02:15:00 Of course we have had fine days, with a moderate shutter speed you could have photographed a couple of them if your reflexes were very good. ;) R2x1 (4628)
