663157 2008-04-28 02:50:00 You can also upgrade the HDDs without much problem. wratterus (105)
663158 2008-04-28 02:55:00 Only problem with that is that it voids the warranty. Just use a USB one and you'll be set. ubergeek85 (131)
663159 2008-04-28 02:57:00 There is that. wratterus (105)
663160 2008-04-28 03:04:00 Oh, and you can install Linux on a PS3 (easily too). [/rant]

Why would I want to do that? I messed about with several distributions of Linux about 7-8 years ago and it was a pain in the ass. I did get as far as running eggdrop bots and mysql & php. A lot more hassle than it is worth and definitely not user friendly.

I find that strange. I rang Sony and they said it didn't void the warranty and was a user upgradeable feature. They quoted me page 14 - 16 of the PS3 "Safety and Support" manual where it gives a step by step tutorial on doing just that.

I whacked in a 120GB HDD in around 3-4 minutes. easy peasey!!

It does not get past the fact that the 40Gb models currently available are not as compatible as the earlier models. Maybe with future firmware updates they might be. Maybe it is Sony's way of keeping the PS3 game writers in a job.

663164 2008-04-28 03:42:00 im seriously trying to stave off buying a PS3 or even a 360 - but the more i think about it the more i want one

as it is i only have a PS2 for 2 games:

Gran Turismo 4

and Canis Canem Edit (Bully)

these 2 games are not available for PC - if they were i would not have a need for a Console

at the moment we have GT5 Prologue and eventually GT5 Full out on the PS3 - now i love the Gran Turismo Series and waste a lot of time in them :p - seeing as sony wont release such a game on the PC if i want to play it i will have to get a PS3 - then again if i get a PS3 that can play PS2 games i can play GT5, Bully and GT4 :D

will have to wait a long time till prices really start dropping though :horrified

hopefully there will be more change than that. we all know you can replace the current one with your own 2.5" sata hdd and it will install what is needed by itself.
