Ya gotta remember that almost everything in the US is miles and miles away from where we live. Travel and gasoline as so entrenched into our lives that any little burp of a price increase really hurts.

If you had fuel prices like we have or that the UK has you would be definitely considering trading in your gas guzzler for something more efficient.

Distance in the US is no excuse for that amount of fuel being used, Australia has more of a distance factor than USA and you don't see the huge over sized gas guzzlers in Australia like USA has had for many many years.

USA has made some in-roads to more efficient vehicles that can attain the same output as the old has been gas guzzlers but they have a long way to go in fuel efficiency, as you say Joe a lot of people in USA it is just a who give a **** mind set on the over use of fuel.

Start taking photos of your cars on the USA roads, because in 20-25 years time they will be gone and replaced by extremely efficient ones. GM is leading the way in USA on that score.

662634 2008-04-26 01:17:00 It's getting pretty bad here...we are paying $1.03/L (NZD/Litre or about $3.90USD/US gallon) right now...and the pre-Summer/vacation season is just starting when they rake us over worse than normal.

How's it going there?

I don't know what you are complaining about. Considering the USA wages are a lot higher too, your petrol rices are half what we pay. You also get cheap products and cars, compared to the prices here. Even Dell sells products a lot cheaper than Dell sell them here for.

662635 2008-04-26 02:00:00 Sorry to hear that Joe, big price increase in fuel there means we can expect even bigger increases here :( Every little burp of a price increase really hurts you guys for sure, and it hurts us even more! It is like a snowball rolling down a hill, starts off small in the US, ends up huge in NZ.

Imagine if your cars were as expensive as ours and you had to pay almost $2 a litre for octane 91?

I don't think they get charged the same tax on fuel we do here. I think the government should look at a maximum fixed rate of tax on fuel, because each time the fuel price rises, the governments tax from fuel also rises. They won't do this of course, and they will use the argument, that if they did this, their total tax intake would fall, as people would be spending less on non fuel purchases due to them having a fixed income.

662637 2008-04-26 02:51:00 ...their total tax intake would fall, as people would be spending less on non fuel purchases due to them having a fixed income.

In other words the govt don't care that we spend a greater % of our income on fuel.

If their argument is true, then the reverse is also true. If people were taxed less on fuel then they would spend the difference elsewhere - so the govt would still be raking in the GST down the line anyway! Idiots.

If they want to help the economy, then they should a) do something about fuel tax and b) remove GST from basic foods.

Terry . . that site you posted is full of Bull Durham .

Here's a quote:

" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Does the U . S . export oil? Surprisingly, yes - but the amount is trivial, about 20,000 barrels per day vs . our 10,000,000 and more b/d imports . All exported crude goes to Canada, where it is likely refined and sent back as gasoline . "

The fact is that ALL the oil in the Alaskan peninsula is owned, parceled and shipped out of the US by BP and it goes to Japan and China .

The US citizens get absolutely NO oil from the exploration, pumping and pipelining of the oil to the lower 48 as was promised by BP .

The Alaskan oil bank is rife with UK corruption and as I am beginning to see the UK sucks a lot of other materials and raw product from the US .

Up until a year or so ago, BP also had been or was a major player in the management of all the US harbors and longshoremen unions . They (BP) were just a paper company for the real owners . . . . Saudi Arabia .

Looks to me like there's a lot of "business" concerns that are robbing every country and hiding under the skirts of international trade laws and regulations .

No wonder that NZ gets shorted in the food and energy line too . Since NZ isn't a real military threat to the rest of the world, youse guys get overcharged and under represented . What youse guys need is a big stick and a few dedicated stick-swingers!

662640 2008-04-26 06:30:00 Twist and turn as you may Joe :), there is no gainsaying...I like that word...no gainsaying that the US has been the most profligate in squandering its resources, regardless, in pursuit of 'The American Dream'.

Now just when things are beginning to bite a little, people are beginning to squeal.
Your fuel is still most likely the cheapest in the western world.

Just wait until you pay what the Europeans are paying now....around US$2/litre....and the lights go out in Times Square.....

. . . nah . . . not twisting in the wind here . . . I expect it to get even much worse .

We just got a news flash that the gas prices are exceeding $5 . 00 a US gallon in some places in California . . and that's sure to trickle down to the rest of the union .

That's $1 . 68 NZD/L .

It's gonna rain all over everyone .

Mexico has much cheaper fuel and there are lines of US citizens who goto Mexico and fuel up and return daily .

Our milk is $4 . 96/gallon . . . that's about $6 . 35/3 . 79L or $1 . 65/L . Milk and gasoline seem to run in about the same price range historically .

Bread is $4 . 00USD or $5 . 12NZD for a 0 . 45kg loaf . . . this is cheap bread .

Rents are in the $1800 . 00 USD or $2300 . 00 NZD/month

House payments are about $2500 . 00 USD or $3200 . 00 NZD plus property taxes . Those are about medium/local prices . . . and are depressed prices too .

Don't forget to add in utilities and maintenance .

My last working weekly wage got me about $1,000 . 00 USD or $1280 . 25 NZD .
