662599 2008-04-26 11:42:00 I don't think the advertising is misleading. It is a 12.5% discount and worth having.

As for not registering your business for GST, that is ok but only applies to small business - the threshold is $40,000 turnover ie. total money you receive per annum. Once you get over that limit you must register.

662600 2008-04-26 11:54:00 I don't think the advertising is misleading . It is a 12 . 5% discount and worth having .

Then why don't they say, 12 . 5% discount off everything . GST Free, means that the invoice should show zero GST .

Also if you are a business, and buy from a non GST registered company, you cannot then claim back the 12 . 5% back on the purchase when you submit your GST return . I am sure however many businesses do claim it back anyway, as they assume that because it is a business purchase, that they can claim back the GST .

It is misleading, btw, it is not a 12 . 5% discount you are getting, common misconception along with this misleading advertising . You are merely not paying the 12 . 5% that you normally would, overall this equates to a smaller figure of 11 . 11% discount, not far off but still not what is advertised huh?

662602 2008-04-26 14:41:00 Yes Deathwish I agree . I suppose thats why they don't say 12 . 5% off but GST Free is quicker and easier for buyers to comprehend .

Hey - its a discount, why complain .

662603 2008-04-26 15:48:00 Plus 12.5% on isn't 12.5% off. Cicero (40)
662604 2008-04-26 15:58:00 Plus 12 . 5% on isn't 12 . 5% off .

Nope . 12 . 5% of 100 is 12 . 50 .

12 . 5% of 112 . 50 is 14 . 06

So a true 12 . 5% discount would reduce the $112 . 5 to $98 . 44 . I don't think they work it that way somehow . :D

yeah, a discount is a discount, no matter how much, if they do it without you asking it should always be appreciated . You are right about that but the problem here is the way it is advertised (a moral issue) but yeah, I think I'll just drop it lol . I don't care for the 1 . 4% difference at any of these places anyway, it's not like I'll ever spend enough at somewhere like Mitre 10 for it to make any difference so . . . . . . . . meh . :banana

662606 2008-04-27 09:29:00 "A rose by any other name would still smell as sweet" I'll take the discount, regardless of how they word it. Using GST wording tends to get your attention and it obviously did so!

Companies don't like it any more than most of the rest of us. They regard themselves as mostly unpaid tax collectors.

After a drive back from Hawkes Bay I'm too tired to work out the equations, so I will take Winston's word for that!!:D

662607 2008-04-27 09:45:00 Yep, that's basicaly what I meant in my first post, either way you dice it, it's cheaper than they're usually offering it and I'm sure it's a simple calculation for them to charge you a "GST-free price" even though they still need to add it in. So instead of charging $100 + GST, they'll charge $88.89 + GST, right?

So even though it's more like an 11% discount than a 12.5% discount, a discount is a discount.
