2008-04-27 22:31:00 | Can anyone tell me if the Playstation 3 can also play PS2 games or anything other than PS3 games? I read one web page that said not but I see no mention of compatibility on Sony's web pages.

2008-04-27 23:53:00 | Yes and no it can play MOST PS2 games fine with the odd exception of some games if you have a specific game you want to find out about you can check here: www.us.playstation.com

2008-04-27 23:54:00 | With the new Version (40GB) you can't play PS 2 games. With the older versions (30(?) and 60GB) it works with the most games. | Crow1985 (6683) | |
2008-04-28 00:09:00 | The 60Gb one can (it has a PS2 chip in it for it). The new 40Gb one doesn't have a PS2 chip in it, so to play back PS2 games, it emulates the PS2 chip (quite hard is it's a 128bit CPU), so playing could hit a few bumps, but it's getting better with every update to the firmware. | ubergeek85 (131) | |
2008-04-28 02:42:00 | My Daughter is looking at the new models so I think 40Gb are currently on the market. She is wondering about a PS3 with very few games available or a PS2 with lots of games available and cheaper console and games. But if the PS3 could play some PS2 games then it might make it more viable.

Going by en.wikipedia.org the 40Gb model has a couple of differences to earlier models. |

2008-04-28 02:48:00 | 60Gb PS3's aren't available any more in NZ, and haven't been in some time. You can buy 2nd-hand 60Gb units of Trade Me etc, but frankly it's not worth the risk. Besides, for what those 60Gb ones on Trade Me are going for, you could buy a brand-new 40Gb PS3 AND a PS2 and probably still have money left over. HTH

2008-04-28 02:50:00 | As a sony fanboy, I reckon she should get a 60Gb PS3, as it has guaranteed PS2 backward-compatibility, and it's more than just a games machine, lots more. Firmware updates come out every so often which give it heaps more features (eg skype I think). The PS2 is older, and, while it has a large game library, I see it as dead in the water. Oh, and you can install Linux on a PS3 (easily too). [/rant] | ubergeek85 (131) | |
