| 664967 | 2008-05-02 08:51:00 | Hey fellas, Campbell Live had something about Sophie Gray how that buying veges and meat from the supermarket can be $$ that the specialist can be cheaper. What do you guys do and those who are in Welly - can you suggest any places :thanks Is it that the vege market on cable street or is there one also near the Terrace Tunnel? Is that just veges and fruits? Do they do meats and fish too? Where is the best for that .. some people buy from Moore Wilsons and Newtown's Fish place ... but I am not sure if the Newtown fish place still sell to the general public. Or is Prestons good or Mad Butcher  Edit, I don't want to buy bulk and freeze. I prefer them fresh :D or eat what is in season. Thanks :D |

I think we (family of 5) spend ~$40 on veges/fruit etc per week. from the riverbank market. Would think it would cost us at least $60 if we got everything from the supermarket. Also in the hutt is the UNBEATABLE Waterloo butcher. CANNOT be beaten for quality :D His sossies are particularly fab! |

| 664970 | 2008-05-03 03:02:00 | Thanks, the hutt is a bit too far :( The Tawa is a bit too small, Moore Wilsons Farmer Market in Keneperu is a bit too small. Seen those before. I go to the supermarket but not for produce or meat. I drove to Newtown today and that fish store has been demolished, I was told but wasn't sure on the details, then Newtown had traffic, I was going to go to Island Bay Butcher since they were in the same sort of area and it was claimed best butcher for Wellington. So I did a u-turn out. Not much point going all that way in the future for that when the fish store is not there ... I went to Moore Wilsons and got the fish - the whole one :D - I find easier to cook then just fillet flesh, plus skin is one of the best for nutrients and presentation. I had a look at their meat but didn't like it, they were cheaper than supermarkets, I find that supermarkets are only good on price if they are on special. But I wasn't thrilled with packaged meat shoved on the shelf .. :groan: That was Moore Wilsons as well but they used shrink wrapping kinda thing. They did have a larger selection thou like Ostrich and such ... and bigger sizes that might appeal to trade customers. I wanted something that you could ask the guy behind the counter and he could cut to your specification and wrap up in paper. There is Meat on Tory which their website shows a bit posh looking and has a cooking school or what and a v ludicrious point earning scheme. I may use that after work before I catch the bus home. In the w'end I may get to Porirua for some of the wholesale butchers available to public and Moore Wilson also has a branch there .... I tend to shop for food each 3rd day cos I like it fresh and its just simple if I do it that way, I know what I am eating in the next day or two ... |
