664362 2008-04-30 06:54:00 My wife just pointed out to me that food is a consumable, not a goods, why then was it ever included in the GST tax bracket.

If the entire country could afford good food, they would be healthier, less of a drain on the infrastructure and have more chance of working and contributing to the economy instead of the opposite.

Lets think about it.

Goods and Services Tax.....How can you quantify food as a goods?

Cooked or prepared food (GST) vs raw meat and vege (no GST) that is how they work out VAT in the UK.

Yes, but in the UK, its not GST, VAT is Value ADDED Tax.....raw product with service is VAT....big difference........ah.

So, NZ GST ( Helen Clark says the envy of the world...LOL, she means of course....world wonder at NZ taxpayer apathy) has it wrong.

664367 2008-04-30 07:22:00 Yeah let's dick around with GST - then we'll need an army of inspectors to decide what has the tax on it and what doesn't. We could take GST of homes in Grey Lynn as well so that poor yuppies can buy there again.

Leave GST as it is - changing it so that some items are excluded would be dumb idea of the year.

I disagree . . . . . most items, especially in supermarkets are computer labeled for price . As for what items to exclude, they already have bureaucracy in place to administer and govern what items are relevant anyway, as some items are already exempt .
To say otherwise is a cop-out, 1, it would be a once off, 2nd, the government is worried at tax income .

Tax in this country is way out of order, stats in the other post state 50% rise in prices and salaries since 98? .

How come then $60K is STILL the high bracket amount?, $60K for 1 income family is not a lot!

Excise tax on petrol is neither goods or service, yet you are charged gst on it. Maybe they should look at lowering GST to 10%, instead of tax cuts. It probably isn't as inflationary to drop GST. What did they do for tax revenue before GST?

You've caught onto something SolMiester - we shouldn't be tinkering with GST, we should be dealing with the income tax thresholds. Get rid of the 39% bracket, and lift the thresholds for each level of taxation so it's in line with inflation and what-not.

Excise Tax?, tax before GST?, and therefore tax on tax....so many picks at the cherry! It looks worse every time you look at it....

Tax on earning, tax on savings, tax on spending, tax on death.....how much in the dollar does that work out to?

Seriously, government spending.....even if they have surplus....tax period needs revisiting......

Will we ever get a government with enough gumption to take it on?....

Yeah right!!
