663691 2008-04-28 22:00:00 Just had a thought this morning...

Telstra in Aussie has just closed down their CMDA (I think) network...I'm sure there will be a heap of phones that are now useless.

I kinda need a new phone, and don't want to wait till the end of the year to get Nokia's new flip top. (I like Nokia).

What I'm wondering is if anyone knows if the now useless Telstra phones will work on Telecom's CDMA network.

It's too long to wait to get a GSM phone for Telecom's new network, and I imagine there will be some really good deals on phones over there at the moment.

TIA.

Are you sure about that? Surely you can buy a second hand phone, and get them to connect it up. If you tell them if they don't, you will go to vodafone as many of their phones allow it by switching the simcard around, I am sure they will help you.

A CDMA 027 phone won't work on the Vodafone network no matter how helpful they are.

663696 2008-04-29 11:20:00 It might depend on whether or not Telstra phones can still roam on Telecom's network. If Telstra have switched off all support including accounting for CDMA phones then no chance. Telecom only allow phones from batches that they've supplied to have an NZ based connection. PaulD (232)

I know, but if you say that you will go to their competition (eg. after buying a cheap second hand GSM phone off trademe), they might be willing to help. I think their world mode phones could work on both GSM and CDMA, unless they have them locked to not work on vodafones network.

The "World-Mode" Telecom phone will NOT roam on the Vodafone network - they will only roam on an overseas GSM network.

Pity... if Telecom were investing (ha!) in an upgraded network (ie. GSM) then just think of all the cool phones you could buy overseas and use here! Instead of the pathetic selection available (because of course, no-one overseas is really using CDMA any more - Japan and parts of USA - plus NZ, so why manufacture phones for a small market - relatively speaking - when you have the rest of the world to sell to?)

So this won't work? (tech.nztechie.com)
