801302 2009-08-15 06:07:00 I have a problem with a HP Pavilion dv1000

After attempting a 'destructive recovery' I was met with the following error:-

"Winnt_root\System32\Hal.dll missing or corrupt:

Please re-install a copy of the above file."

I could still get to the HP Recover Console by pressing a function key at boot but despite retrying nothing changed.

Therefore I installed XP Pro onto the C: partition and it seemed to install fine and so did Service Pack 2 but then I realized the installation had not detected there was a wireless card (nor can I find a way to get it to do so as it is not visible in Device Manager) and the graphic options were limited (eg no Hibernate and done think it realises it is a widescreen), not sure what else. When I boot I get the option of booting to the new XP Pro or XP Windows Embedded but choosing the Embedded option just takes me back to the same error message. Also I cannot now access the Recovery Console at boot.

When in the new installation I can access the D:HP_Recovery partition and find the 'damaged' hal.dll file (by enabling the Folder Option to view Hidden Op Sys files) but I don't want to risk causing more damage than I have already potentially done. So my questions would be:-

Can I get the new install of XP to work fully, it is XP Pro vs the XP Home that was on there

or

Can the hal.dll be repaired or replaced?

or

Can I try getting the HP Recovery Console to run again from inside the new install, but even if I did would I just end up with the same err or. I believe the hal.dll problem may relate to the boot.ini on the problem OS?

tks for your help.

So my

801303 2009-08-15 06:21:00 To get the New Install Going correctly you need to install the drivers, either from HP web site (h20180.www2.hp.com) - select the correct model. OR if you look in the Old C Drive of teh damaged install, you should find a hidden folder called HP - normally in there are the drivers, thee need to be installed.

You sometimes can replace the .hal - Heres How (pcsupport.about.com) other times it requires a repair install or complete reinstall, just depending on what system damage has occured.

That link provides steps to fixing this problem.

You can download the recovery consolve iso here:
www.thecomputerparamedic.com

Then use an Image burning program such as ImgBurn to burn the iso as and image, rather than as a file...

801305 2009-08-15 07:17:00 Hi guys and thanks for the suggestions, but unless I am not reading it properly they only seem to apply to doing a repair on the new installation not fixing a the problem on the recovery partition - if I have this wrong then please correct me.

Is there a way do you know that by getting into the 'hidden' partition, I can try re-running the HP Recovery Console that is normally accessed by pressing the function button at boot?

801306 2009-08-15 07:42:00 You may as well do a clean install with Pro, delete both partitions then reinstall XP. You'll have to get the drivers from the HP as WT posted. Then hopefully, it'll activate it. Or connect the hdd to a working system get the ISO's off the recovery partition then burn them. Then reinstall XP with the dvd / cd's you burned Speedy Gonzales (78)
801307 2009-08-15 07:46:00 Since you got the message from the original
After attempting a 'destructive recovery' A destructive recovery usually wipes every thing, all data, programs OS the LOT - then installs the OS from scratch just as it was when you first brought the PC.

One reason is IF its causing an error on that - then theres a chance the recovery image is damaged in some way - meaning its useless.

In the previous post I linked (so did Blam) suggestions to replace the hal.dll - BUT that also doesn't often work - hence repair install and that 9 times out of 10 does work.

You could do a repair install on the original XP with a legal XP HM or upgrade it to XP Pro - once again - legal COA required.

Tks Wainuitech, the XP Pro is legal it belonged to a machine that no longer exists so there wont be 2 of them. I tried downloading what I believe was the correct wireless driver from HP but when I ran it, it extracted and nothing else happened and with the graphics driver I ended up with a "The INF File does not contain information for this system hardware"

I appreciate your patience, and so am I correct in suggesting that I try and repair the XP install I have done, and it should detect my hardware?

Speedy the HP_recovery is on a separate partition so is there any advantage to removing that?

tks again to all

801309 2009-08-15 10:09:00 I know the recovery partition is on another partition, but if you connect the hdd to a working system, then see if there are ISO's on it (if there is copy them to the working system), then burn them. Then you'll have the restore cd's/dvd. Then once you reinstall it, it'll recreate the restore partition Speedy Gonzales (78)

I guess I will need help with that as its beyond me on a laptop. I have access tot he partition and can see all the files in there so can I just look for ISO's and then copy them?

tks

801311 2009-08-15 10:24:00 Yup if theyre not too big and the laptop is connected to something else like a network, copy them to the other PC. There MAY be more than 1 So how can you see it, if it wont boot? Speedy Gonzales (78)
