801098 2009-08-14 14:25:00 ADSL2...... What cabling is this installed to the home with?

Normal phone line I think. All you need is the modem/router/whatever. I'm on ADSL, and this isnt using coax. The modem/router has 4 ports and wireless and 3 pcs and an Xbox are connected to it

801099 2009-08-14 14:26:00 Yea those modems are adsl so maybe they dont support wireless routers on cable?

Which is pretty slack

That should not affect you using wireless!

801101 2009-08-14 14:27:00 Yup well then that maybe different then if its cable. Thats probably what the guy meant. Its cable you cant use modems/routers like ADSL. And its only for 1 PC Speedy Gonzales (78)

But it is still possible to run a router of a Cable modem, that I am sure of, but, does that router have to have a WAN port?

At the moment the modem runs into 1 comp, which is broadcasting wifi to the rest

EDIT: This basicly brings me back to my first question, can I buy any old Wireless router/ LAN or does it need to have a WAN PORT?

801103 2009-08-14 20:54:00 Get something such as this:
www.pricespy.co.nz
Put Tomato on it"
www.polarcloud.com

Now, you CAN use a wireless router / AP, its just that Telstraclear don't support it for a few reasons.
Plug the WAN port of the WL-520GU into the back of the Cable modem they've supplied

You've been given a lot of misleading information in this thread, by people who don't actually have a TelstraClear cable connection. TelstraClear don't provide support for wireless routers or anything like that, since people have different makes and models, which makes it difficult to give specific advice to users. The "security" reasons you were cited are a load of rubbish - just about everyone I know with TelstraClear cable has a Wifi network set up.

You can use any Wireless router which doesn't include an ADSL modem, such as the one suggested by Chilling_Silence. They WILL include an ethernet WAN port, which you can plug into the cable modem supplied by TelstraClear. I'm using one of these routers: http://www.webgauge.co.nz/ plugged into the TelstraClear cable modem, and it works great.

801105 2009-08-14 23:15:00 Agreed - as Somebody says, you've been given a lot of misleading information. Any router with an ethernet WAN port will do the job just fine.

If your modem uses a coax connection, then it's definitely a cable one, not ADSL - the two technologies are totally different things.

Note that you'll need to do a bit of extra setup to get the router running - you'll need to enter your IP address / gateway / DNS settings into the router config, as these aren't automatically set.
