665120 2008-05-03 00:25:00 I have a Sony KLV40D300A LCD TV and a Sony DVD recorder RDR-HX750 connected though a TelstraClear Digital decoder.
The decoder is connected to the DVD recorder by a RCA cable then onto the TV with another RCA cable linking the units as “Decoder>>>DVD Player>>>TV”.

This setup works okay but it means the DVD Player must be on for the TV to work.

Recently spoke to a TV salesman who stated that if the decoder was connected to the
TV direct by an RCA cable then connected to the DVD player via a coaxial cable, the DVD player could be connected to an additional connection on the TV thus no need for the DVD player to be turned on for the TV to work.

TC Decoder>>>TV (via RCA)
TC Decoder>>>DVD Player (via coaxial)
DVD Player>>>TV (via RCA using an additional TV connection)

Before I purchase an additional cable I would like know if this would work?

Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated.

Does the Telstra box only have one set of RCA outputs?
The Sky deocders have two or three outputs (1 RCA & 2 SCART) which allows you to connect the box in the way you want but you get a better picture as you don't have to use the coax connection.

Four outputs: 1 coaxial 1 S-Video 2 RCA the second RCA output has a black female plug instead of yellow!

I've read elsewhere that the image would suffer using the coax connection, thanks for the reminder.

I have the same TV as you but, the HX950 DVD recorder and Sky. What do you mean by having the DVD recorder on. It is only in standby mode the same as when you have a VCR connected up.

Exactly that, the power switch is turned on. If you chain link the decoder though the DVD or VCR player onto the TV the DVD or VCR has to be powered on.

Standby mode has power on.

665125 2008-05-03 05:20:00 Although I haven't tried or want to try what the salesman said, I would expect you would still need the DVD recorder to be in standby mode just like a VCR. The RF modulator needs power. Anyway the amount of power it is useing in standby mode well save you about $2 a year.
