802519 2009-08-19 10:39:00 I'm piecing together older parts to make enough running boxes for kids. I'll be giving them away free.
This particular combination won't get past windows logo after the drivers installing during XP install. It suddenly rebooted and I've not been able to get it going past splash screen since.
Mobo: Biostar M7TDB
Celeron 478 1.7ghz
Ram: 1 x 256 PC133
XP Pro SP3

No network card. Disconnected floppy and has no other cards bar video.

Tried two AGP cards & also a PCI video card gave same result.

Have updated BIOS.

Memtest passes OK.

Initially it was having problems installing XP so I formatted again and installed W98. After ironing out the bugs, I re-formatted and proceeded with the XP install. Still the problem as outlined above.

I reset BIOS to default and also have tweaked anything that remotely resembles a video setting.

I reasoned it may be the video driver but am puzzled as to why it happens with the PCI card as well.

Any suggestions please or is the mobo toast?

802520 2009-08-19 10:49:00 Will it boot into safe mode? nofam (9009)
802521 2009-08-19 10:49:00 Will it boot into safe mode, without stopping? Try replacing the CMOS battery Speedy Gonzales (78)
802522 2009-08-19 11:02:00 If it works OK in Win98 - then there maybe something in XP SP3 thats causing the problem - read as boards to old to support it. The "latest" BIOS is dated 2003 (year)

I'd try an earlier version of XP first - as the Drivers page (www.biostar-usa.com) has drivers back to Win95.

802523 2009-08-19 11:33:00 Won't boot to safe mode ....stops at same driver file each time: mup.sys
Cmos battery tests at 3v OK
Too old for SP3? ...just could be.
Wainui: those bios files links are dead. I've been trying for a week or more on those.
Will the other drivers be of use if I can't get it to boot with SP3?
Will try earlier XP tomorrow...

802524 2009-08-19 11:48:00 Get it here (ftp://ftp.biostar-usa.com/bios/M7TDB/). Looks like they've named the files wrong, thats why it cant find them. It takes a while for it to get to safe mode, and does stop on mup.sys. Wait a few mins Speedy Gonzales (78)
802525 2009-08-20 18:36:00 It takes a while for it to get to safe mode, and does stop on mup.sys. Wait a few mins It ends up by loosing video signal just the same. Tbird650 (6754)
802526 2009-08-20 19:09:00 Install of XP SP2 fails in the same manner. Am trying an old XP home disc now and....
it got marginally further... but stops with no video signal too.
Should I bin it?

I should mention I have the bios udate MTD0204B which I picked up elsewhere a week ago after not having any joy with biostar site.

802527 2009-08-20 21:40:00 Did you read post 6?? I gave you a working link to the BIOS update. I wouldnt download the BIOS update from anywhere else. You dont know whats in it Speedy Gonzales (78)
802528 2009-08-21 22:46:00 Speedy, downloaded bios as per your link and reflashed. Same result.... the video signal drops shortly after splash screen.

It would be a shame if this mobo is faulty as it has never failed to give a solid single beep on start.

I'm out of ideas for it.... any suggestions??
