802403 2009-08-19 05:04:00 I have just bought a new HD drive (160G) because old one running out of space. All the way from installing Windows Xp to transferring file, I have encountered a few error messages. They all different messages - Disk Read Error, Error (-5009:0x80040702), IE/ OE /Adobe Air Installer / wuauclt.exe / Generic Host Process foe win32 / winlogon / servides and controller app. / has encounter a problem. All error report back Hard Drive problem. Printer is extremely slow to print. Check the Task Manager the CPU Usage gone up to 100%. Now a new message came up every time starting the PC - Pri Master Hard Disk : S.M.A.R.T. Status Bad, Back and Replace...F1 ro resume. I have searched the website, and it all saying HD is falling. Is that any chance that motherboard or cable or ram can be failling. The shop that sold me HD insisted that NEW HD very robust and seldom fail. Thanks for any help.

802404 2009-08-19 05:11:00 If SMART says the drive is failing, then replace it. End of story, it's not worth the risk. What shop is not keen on the idea of replacing a new hard drive? wratterus (105)
802405 2009-08-19 05:12:00 Try another cable, if it keeps saying its bad, take it back and replace it. Too bad what the shop thinks or says. Theyre not using it. You are.

What service pack is installed?

802406 2009-08-19 05:15:00 What brand was it and what shop?
While I stick with Seagate or Western Digital, any drive can fail.
Its failing for sure.

802407 2009-08-19 05:40:00 They wanted me to take the pC for them to check, but I can't b'cos it is my work PC. So they lend me a 2nd HD to test, but it is very annoying to load and install everything again. Is there a free software where I can copy files from old HDD to new HDD. If nothing wrong with the 2nd HDD, then that proof everything. ahd8888 (184)
802408 2009-08-19 05:45:00 Totally agree with pctek & wratterus mention - just because its new doesn't mean its not faulty.

Had brand new drives fail while installing windows - so it does happen. It NEEDS to be RMA'ed, / Replaced, and it should be right away - not waiting for it to be returned to the manufactures.

802409 2009-08-19 15:06:00 if SMART says the drive is bad, the drive is BAD.

SMART is not very Smart (only warns on failure about 50% of the time) but when it detects a problem, you've got a problem.

it *could* be a faulty data (or Power) cable causing problems BUT brand new drives can break, just because they don't usually doesn't mean they won't.

Run something like Speedfan to find out what exactly SMART thinks is a problem. If it's the "UltraATA CRC Error rate" then your cable is probably faulty.
