| 666704 | 2008-05-09 03:39:00 | I laughed at this, you believe in God yet dispute his judgment? There is more than one way to follow God and more than one way to keep His commandments. I am not a fundamentalist - while christians may have some difficulty with this idea, rooted as they are in the idea that their bible is the "word of God" - by far the more ancient and considered view of the bible is that it is an account of a history and a collection of the commandments to the Jews and writings of wise men and kings. Do you have any idea of the rabbinical commentary on the book of Proverbs? Can you distinguish between custom and decree? Are you familiar with the Noachic covenant? And you laugh at me and accuse me of disputing God's judgement? I can't say that worries me much... |

Care to explain how you can obey this in more than one way? 7th Commandment - Do no commit Adultery. etc etc Seriously, how the hell can you obey that in more than one way? You are either doing it or not. "...Love your neighbour as yourself..." um, well sure there are many ways you can do that, but its all relevant to the same commandment - you are either loving them as yourself or not. Deuteronomy 11: "Therefore thou shalt love the LORD thy God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments, always" Clearly there are many different ways to obey these commandments... /sarcasim |

| 666707 | 2008-05-09 05:55:00 | I believed the purpose of the new law was to enable the court recourse against those parents actually do abuse their kids as in a closed fist, or other solid material, however like most laws, it is only ever law abiding citizens who heed such a law. The courts have always been able to do something about those that abuse their kids. Wether they have done so or not is another thing. |

| 666708 | 2008-05-09 05:57:00 | I was in Hamilton East on Wednesday where a parent showed the ugly face of "lovingly disciplining" her child to the extent that passengers in cars stopped at the lights were yelling at her to lay off. Her response was to threaten them with the same violence. There's no way that behaviour like that wins respect. From what I can understand here I would agree with you. |

| 666709 | 2008-05-09 06:04:00 | So explain the difference? Do you hit your dog? Do you hit your child? If you answer yes to both of those questions then explain why it is that you wouldn't hit your employee (for instance). :groan: |

If you don't teach them what's is wrong and right, it's going to affect the rest of their lives. And doing wrong has its consequences, not those violent consequences but like smacking on the hand, buttocks, etc I'm all for teaching kids whats right or wrong but why does it have to be with a smack, is there no other option you can think of? Take away a favorite toy for a while, time out, cancel a trip, there are a multitude of punishments that don't include violence. |

| 666711 | 2008-05-09 11:40:00 | however dont preach to me how to raise & discipline a child. That's fair enough SolMiester - however, I have not preached to you. How you raise your kids is of very little consequence to me - but the topic of parental discipline is of consequence to everybody. |

| 666712 | 2008-05-09 11:50:00 | Clearly there are many different ways to obey these commandments... /sarcasim Most of the commandments in the bible were given to the Jews (613 of them - of which only 50 or so govern the everyday life of most contemporary Jews) - only seven were relevant to Gentiles. Of the commandments to the Jews, a great deal has been written and a great deal of custom has formed around these commentaries to which Jews give almost equal weight in their observances. Kashrut (kosher) law is a perfect example - there are a great many different ways to observe, for example, the commandment not to steep a kid in its mother's milk. |

The Naughty Step - that'll control 'em! :clap Take away a favorite toy for a while, time out, cancel a trip, there are a multitude of punishments that don't include violence. It won't be long before some of those options, such as depriving a child of their favourite toy, will be construed as child abuse. Sometimes I reckon it's the parents who need smacking and not the kids.:D |
