The IRA and their street justice has made Northern Ireland such a great place to live for the last 50 years. :confused: Indeed it has. Its also a very effective form of "punishment" aka you ruined my/our lives so now I will ruin yours. |

The US seems to lead the "get tough" movement and they have the worst crime in the western world. You'd have more chance of surviving in Baghdad than some parts of LA. Unfortunately people listen to the Sensible Sentencing Trust who will ultimately offer up exactly what they claim to oppose - a more violent society. Yeah, Ok, Show some proof that Sensible sentencing trust will create a more violent country, without using the USA which as demonstrated by everything that's ever been written or said about the place shows it is in no way related to NZ. Just look at Surfer Joes posts as an example, What he posts and describes is quite alien to us in NZ. 3 strikes and your gone sounds good to me, Though a half motivated NZ crim would have that ranked up before his or her 14th Birthday, And I'm not at all concerned if the crims get angry about getting punished for their actions, It takes a lot of work to get locked up. Constant police interference in their illegal activities will break up their organisations, disrupt their activities, hurt their cash flow, make manufacture and distribution of drugs harder, scare off the fringe dwellers, etc etc etc. Punishment is the consequence of ilegal behaviour, Not the cause, The hardline is a reaction to rising crime and increasingly violent crime.. Are you suggesting that the cause of crime is law abiding citizens who see no need to tolerate it? we shoud do what?, reward the scum for preying upon the very society they act against? |

| 665906 | 2008-05-07 14:55:00 | i say the re-offence should be the last offence and the USA's homicide rates are not comparable to NZ... there there's people able to be firing a gun to (successfully) kill a man in the time it takes their target to back down their driveway and (try to) drive off, while here we have people (attempting) to rob a gun store with a knife ***! |
