It is believed to be largely due to it costing more than it used to.

665643 2008-05-07 06:11:00 Myanmar May Import Rice After Cyclone; Price Rebounds.

Myanmar may be forced to import rice after crops were wiped out by a cyclone that may have killed as many as 20,000 people, potentially adding further pressure to global food supplies as prices gain.

Rice futures rebounded.

665646 2008-05-09 23:36:00 Everything costs more to produce, but the rise is not as much as rice. A combination of rice farmers convert to produce other crops, especially in China probably for the coming Olympic games catering for the guests. Also, there will be some hoarding because it at least takes awhile for the convertion and reversion. lightfoot (39)
