'Scuse me - what is this "even elderly people" bit you should have been a little discriminating and said "even young brats welded to their PC's and doing a bit of gaming" instead. Oh well!!

667055 2008-05-08 05:12:00 I must admit that telecom does provide good support,

Haha. I spend ages being Helpdesk for Xtra customers who have ended up going round and round in circles getting nowhere with Xtras "help"desk.

Their support sucks. Unbelievable some of the things they have said to me directly too.

Must get their quals from a cornflakes packet.

667056 2008-05-08 05:17:00 They are hopeless.

If they run out of bits of paper to read off, they will tell you to uninstall any anti virus or firewall software you may have installed.

667057 2008-05-08 05:43:00 The only time I had to ring them (setting up a mate's DSL - needed them to reset the PVC), I got a girl on helpdesk who was obviously reading off a cheat sheet.

I politely told her I was an IT guy, and she put me straight through to a lovely chappy called Mohammad, and we got it sorted in no time.

I think they subcontract most of the support outside NZ these days. However everytime I have needed them, I have found them good, and I think the majority of people who phone up must find it adequate, otherwise they wouldn't have any customers. This is unlike slingshot, where after being on hold for 1/2 hour, I was told that they would need to phone me back, as they didn't know the answer to my question, and to this day I am still waiting for the reply.

667059 2008-05-08 06:36:00 Personally I am quite happy with the service supplied by Telecom.

I am supplied with broadband, a telecom mobile phone and a landline. I get one bill for this and it is itemised. Some time back I was unhappy with Xtra and went to Orcon. Orcon changed their pricing plans from "all the data I can eat" for around $60 per month and it was going to cost nearly double for that. Note that their latest plans have increased in price again.

Back with Telecom again. I did buy my own ADSL modem and also my own cellphone. The cellphone usage is billed to my Telecom account and is not prepay.

Don't get stuck out in the wops with a cellphone with not enough credit to phone the Automobile Association for example.

Incidentally there was a fault on my landline a few days back and I phoned faults from the mobile. It took a while to get through but when I did the Helpdesk were actually helpful to the point where they diverted landline calls to my cellphone free.

People do love to bag telecom, but really they are no worse than other providers, and better than many I have tried.

667061 2008-05-08 13:03:00 . . . and better than many I have tried .

Wow ! And some people complain because their house burnt down - compared to your troubles they are luckier than they know .

667062 2008-05-08 18:55:00 Like many here I do not like Telecom / Xtra.

But at least they do advertise trying to get people on to broadband.

Aside from Slingshot, the other ISP's never advertise and you wonder why so many people go with Xtra .

That is a fair point...
