666474 2008-05-06 09:10:00 I suspect that is one of the reasons why they have introduced the locking in the first place, as I suspect apple would require their phones to be locked.

I think they did initially because it is "standard practice" with Apple gear and it was probably done to get AT&T to agree to do the deal with Apple which was originally negotiated back in 2005. AT&T agreed to the original deal without actually seeing the iPhone at the time which is a first for a telco in the cell phone industry. However as selling a "locked" phone is not standard practice in the US or the rest of the world, many of the early adopters who first purchased an iPhone immediately set about finding ways of "unlocking" it, the rest as they say is history.

Consequently Apple decided to release an iPhone SDK which has been very well received by individual developers and enterprise alike.

Buying/importing it is one thing - being able to use it as a phone is another especially when we don't have the EDGE network here and the iPhone wasn't 3G capable at the time of its original release - we also didn't have a 3G capable phone network whereas the Europeans do.

What a silly comment, No way in hell most potential buyers have bought one.

No way in hell most potential buyers have bought one.Completely agree. I've seen a grand total of three in use in New Zealand (the SF Macworld keynote line was a different story ;)).

Im sure they have. The costs of an iphone overseas would be much cheaper than vodafone

666478 2008-05-06 09:42:00 Cost has nothing to do with it, Being shown one by the vodafone rep will do it. All phones are available cheaper elsewhere. Metla (12)

I don't quite understand your comment

Are you saying that people won't care the retail price of an iphone at vodafone but rather the rep at vodafone showing the phone will lure customers into buying one at the shop??

I'll stick with my nokia :).I don't like the iphone at all

Don't forget that the iPhones will all be subsidized by the telco from here on in so your $899 iPhone will probably retail for around $299 or $399 NZ which brings it inline or below the price of other manufacturers phones. As for "luring" customers into the shop to touch and buy an iPhone - that's how they do it in the UK and US.

Yeah, that's how it works with any mobile, handset price near a grand or on a 2 year plan its' only half the price cos they'll be ripping you a new one over the contract's period.
