666287 2008-05-06 01:12:00 I dont like the sound of the accountants getting their fee before you get your money. Thats sounds like cash on delivery to me......Many firms have cash flow issues and the sooner they get their fee the better, however most firm operate with 20th next month.

In my opinion, I'd tell them you arent happy with that and find another accountant.

Problem is, you dont have control on their charges and once the fee in paid, its harder to get back any disputed charges....
Some fair comments but consider this. You are someones accountant, you do all this work for them under a compressed deadline (they shag you around not providing the information until late in the piece, essentially stealing whatever time you had left before the deadline so you now have to work under pressure) - meanwhile you can see them paying their vodafone, telecom, power, supplier bills etc on time and they make you wait for payment until the next time there is a deadline looming (which could be anywhere from 2, to 6 or 12 months later). Been there, done that, no thanks.

Is it then any wonder that if your accountant helps to secure a refund in a timely manner, that he then wants to take his fee from that refund? Personally I wouldn't criticise the process unless you have actually sat on the other side of the desk.....based on my experiences paying ones accountant is usually the last bill that is paid. So I guess they are trying to avoid these problems - I can understand it, but I don't necessarily like or agree with it.

To be fair, I think the terms do state they operate on a 20th of next month basis, and that they can\will only do this when there are outstanding fees .

I had vague thoughts along these lines when I first saw it, which is why I thought I'd just check if it was uncommon or not . By the sounds of it it's not terribly uncommon and as I've said I doubt I'll be getting many tax refunds anyway . . . so I think I can live with it . :)
