802529 2009-08-21 23:48:00 Set the default settings, in the BIOS. Is the date/mth/year right in the BIOS? Change the bootdisk in the BIOS to the hdd. Disable boot up floppy seek, change the AGP aperture size to the amount of ram, thats on the card. Try disabling onboard RAID PCI IDE.

Leave the power settings as is in the BIOS (at their default settings).

I thought I had a result when I discovered that the HDD was set to slave.... so I changed the jumper. It initially got past the splash screen and began "resuming install". Within a couple of minutes it lost the video signal again.

I heard somewhere that disabling the cpu cache can fix problems but be slow...SLOW! Am trying it now, and yep it certainly is slow though it's proceeding with the install.

802531 2009-08-22 10:34:00 2 hours into the install.... it is actually making progress, though it's slow.
Could this be a clue as to the problem?

Am happy to tinker and try any ideas...

It should be noted that this PC was made up from a pile of parts and has never been a working unit. So anything is a possibility!

802532 2009-08-22 10:51:00 Its probably the ram in it. 256mb isnt exactly a lot. Umm, whats the FSB of the CPU?? It is 400 isnt it? Speedy Gonzales (78)
802533 2009-08-22 22:55:00 Speedy,
XP eventually installed with the only error as "INF install failed". So I re-activated cpu cache....and again lost video signal upon start.

Have tried various sticks of ram and run memtest. Running memtest again as I write.
Re the FSB. I believe the cpu is 400. It's marked 1.70ghz/128/400/1.75v. SO I think the 400 figure is the FSB? Interesting memtest-86 v3.5 reports the FSB as 100mhz... ECC as disabled....chipset as Intel i845.

Bios shows clock multiplier as default 10x. The Xcpu clock setting 100mhz is not changeable (greyed out). By changing clock multipier to 15x, xp booted up to windows desktop before loosing video signal.

Should I be looking for an optimum setting for this clock multiplier....or default?

802534 2009-08-22 23:05:00 Correct 400 is the FSB. It probably wouldnt run if it was 533 or 800. Since the mobo by the looks of it only supports 400 FSB. When did that INF install failed message come up?? During the install, or after windows had been installed? And were you installing drivers for something, or a service pack? If the message appeared AFTER windows was installed, did you get a data is invalid error as well? Speedy Gonzales (78)
802535 2009-08-23 05:11:00 When did that INF install failed message come up?? Came up during the install of XP home, last night. This was with the cpu cache disabled which was the only way found to get past splash screen so far.

Am going to look at the manual regarding cpu clock mutiplier etc

802537 2009-08-23 07:44:00 Slipstream the service packs on a copy of the cd + updates. Then burn it, then see what happens Speedy Gonzales (78)
