| 802192 | 2009-08-20 00:26:00 | OK, thanks for that Agent. I think I read that somewhere when following up on purchasing the switch, but basically networking is a bit of an arcane art to me and I was unsure I had got the right end of things. We have just shifted houses, and I can no longer get a secure wireless connection between two of the computers, no matter what I have tried. I figure life is too short to keep on re-connecting the wireless when it has dropped out (not to mention dealing with the frustrations of SWMBO who is on the other end of dropped connections), so I am hard wiring our current house and dumping wireless for that PC. |

| 802193 | 2009-08-20 00:34:00 | I don't use wireless, too expensive, unreliable and slow I'd take a proper 100Mbit ethernet switch over WiFi any day, even 802.11n |

| 802194 | 2009-08-20 00:44:00 | I agree with all that as far as one of the PCs is concerned - it has cost me several adapters, frustration, and grey hairs. :badpc: Oddly my Fujitsu Lifebook lappie seems to be able to deal with the network fine, and it hasn't been upset by moving to this house. I can't ever remember having a dropped connection with it, even when it was a huge distance from the WAP in the old house. I reckon that hard wiring this place will save heaps in the long run as far as the two desktop PCs are concerned, whilst the wee laptop can keep on doing its own wifi thing the way it has for years... |

| 802195 | 2009-08-24 22:47:00 | Just reporting back. The ethernet cable went in this am, and the network fired up straight away. Soooooo fast, and obviously much more stable than the wireless. :clap And obviously the switch works! None of those frustrating dropped connections/failed printing jobs etc that tended to cause potent silences between me and SWMBO (who uses the once was wireless computer). I never got over the feeling that somehow deep down she thought it was my fault. :waughh: Don't know what the bill will be for the cable installation, but whatever, it will be worth it. Once again, thanks guys for your guidance. :) Domestic peace will reign when SWMBO gets back from her trip oop north to see our grandbabbies. |
