Just thought I'd share this with you guys, get some thoughts / feedback.

Basically I took a really old el-cheapo box Im looking to make into a server, some spray paint from the local hardware store and decided to get painting :D:
c2s.co.nz

So I wiped it down with some thinner, didnt manage to get rid of all the scuff marks but didnt really care, was in a hurry, it was a quick test to see how easy painting would be :)

Popped out the power button & the other two drive bay covers and painted those first:
c2s.co.nz

Then the front:
c2s.co.nz

Then the main part of the case:
c2s.co.nz

End results weren't too bad:
c2s.co.nz
c2s.co.nz
c2s.co.nz
c2s.co.nz

Lessons learned?
1) Don't forget to take off the tape put over the "Pentium Inside" sticker before taking photos... or just put those on the case after its been painted (Im going to be doing more of this, but with brand new cases)

2) While a black case might affect the color a bit more, a beige one doesnt, and that blue is *really* bright in the wrong light! Must get a slightly darker blue next time! 'tis a bit of a shame really, that can has a lot of painting left in it...

3) Paint along the thinnest edges first then go back over the bigger parts

4) Two coats would be better than one (I was in a rush and this box as I mentioned was just a trial)

5) Permanent marker still shows through - Use new cases ;)

6) With just a little time, effort & a $9 can of spraypaint, you can spice the look up a bit. Now to add a small LCD Panel to my first server made out of brand-new case & Hardware, and I'm sure it'll look heaps sexy!

Anyways, thought I'd see who else out there's painted their case. I was surprised how quick & easy it really was. I'd done reading on several How-To's that go over a *lot* more details, but yeah... it wasn't really rocket science! :p

Keen for any feedback / thoughts / comments / constructive criticism

Cheers

Chill.

665096 2008-05-02 23:09:00 Very nice!! I love the colour.

I guess you weren't keen to try and paint the optical drives too huh? :p

What sort of spray paint did you use?

665097 2008-05-02 23:15:00 Not bad! Gives a bit of zing to an old boring case. wratterus (105)
665098 2008-05-02 23:41:00 Yeah the next box I build wont have an optical drive, so I didn't wanna mess with taking the covers off them and stuff, for a rush job it wasn't too bad, generally quite an even finish.

Just used whatever Dulux enamel spraypaint they had at Hammer Hardware down the road at the time. Might go to somewhere with a slightly broader range next time and get exactly the color I want :)

665100 2008-05-03 03:42:00 Undoubtedly the most pointless exercise I have seen for a long time. Loved it.
Thanks for sharing it with us.
I might some day show a similar exercise where I took an old tea chest 35 years ago and turned it into a cheap desk for my son, then a year or so ago decided to update it into a snazzy desk I could use myself. Looks good too.

665101 2008-05-03 04:05:00 Patent your idea immediately!!!

Not sure I agree with your comment about the exercise being pointless, Tom.
Art takes many forms and combined with something practical to lift the boring is commendable.

665103 2008-05-03 06:19:00 It actually looks snazzy. I'm converting my old PC into a server too so allow me to steal your idea

Might use red though :D

665104 2008-05-03 06:34:00 For the hour-odd worth of effort to take the case fully apart (Took me longer just coz of the case type), spray it, then re-assemble it, I reckon it's not bad! Just for something a little different.. I get bored of beige on black on beige :(

Here's one of the articles I read. The video showed me how to spray, not something I'd previously really thought about *how* I would spray. Worth the read I s'pose if you're a n00b like me:
www.boxgods.com

I didn't sand it at all though, used the existing paint as a 'primer' really...
