1442782 2017-11-29 21:08:00 the last gasp of a failing businesses model ?

SkyTV are trying to force ISPs to block some websites
www.stuff.co.nz
www.newshub.co.nz

So, blame piracy for decling sales/income .
Typical knee jerk reaction & try to block access . Didnt work in 2001 , wont work in 2017 .
VPNs have now made website blocks impossible . And close one site down and another will popup in its place

Its a slippery slope, open to abuse .
M&M hears a pirated/copied version of his 'song' being used in adverts, gets every news site & TV station that played that ad banned or blocked .
You simply cant have one without the other .

1442783 2017-11-29 21:29:00 Sky are WELL behind the times.

If they changed their business plans to what people ask for they would do well. Stop charging outrageous prices for content, that repeats time and time again, way to many ads for a paid service and give better options.

I know they used to have an option to pay for some events ( not to sure if that's still there - Fan pass or something like that), many people would pay a one off payment to watch one event, BUT what do sky do ? Try to lock you into months of payment - yeah -na!!. They do have the Pay-Per -View events like the Wrestling, kick boxing, and other events etc -- they work well.

As the article says
Netflix has quickly become New Zealand's largest content provider, proving that creating monetised sources of quality online content is the best method to defeat piracy.

People ( well most) will pay for a good quality product, give the people what they want and things will change. Other companies do it and its proven to be a success - seems Sky have their head in the sand still.

1442784 2017-11-29 22:05:00 "Sky's draft injunction, if actually granted, would effectively grant Sky the standing power to block most New Zealanders from accessing any website it deems to be "enabling or facilitating" copyright infringement of a target website"

Well thats the end of youtube in NZ :badpc:
Plenty of pirated content on youtube. That would would have to be the 1st to be blocked .

They are also trying to ban a certain NZer from selling those (Kodi?) boxes that he's advertising as giving users free TV & free movies .
That seems sensible . So , not sure where you can draw the line.

We all know shutting down napster didnt solve the problem. Sky have learnt nothing from the past
Perhaps its all just to appease the Directors & shareholders , as they wont know any better . Better to blame others on failing revenue .

1442785 2017-11-29 22:21:00 Sky just turned over their calender and it said November 28. 1999. paulw (1826)
1442786 2017-11-29 23:02:00 Well the anti-piracy thing, bit of a hassle for the IPs and I'm not sure you can ever stop it, but I think that's fair enough.

As for SKy, well we like the docos. I really don't want to scroll through lists and then download stuff.
I like turning on the TV and finding one right there.

They do have some great docos.
Movies, series, TV - meh.

So for us it's good value. Occasionally we've missed something but no worries it will be on another time, so suits us fine.
I read more than I watch anyway.

But what is anti piracy sites? And by whose definition. And will that definition change. On principal most people can understand their reasoning, but letting them try and control it isn't the way.

First it'd be the pirate bay etc, then as someone suggested, should youtube be blocked? there's a lot of pirated content, or other content that sky also has broadcast rights too. Then what about trademe? you can buy preloaded kodi boxes on there. Ebay? Aliexpress (you can get hdmi strippers there for creating pirated content).....where will it end?

1442788 2017-11-30 00:21:00 But what is anti piracy sites? And by whose definition .

and thats the issue
If sky win the court case/injunction , it will be by SkyTv's definition . I kid you not .
And Sky have admitted they do not have any process in place to deal with sites wrongly blocked .

I could care less if a few torrent sites & streaming sites get blocked . You can bet they only block the obvious ones that most avid downloaders dont use anyway .
What about Mega . Plenty use that for legit purposes . It would surely be on the hit list .

Spark allready do block some, just a simple DNS block . Achieves nothing .

1442789 2017-11-30 00:21:00 The Kodi box sellers would just have to stop pre configuring them for illegal streaming and they could still sell them, then you'd just need some simple instructions to set it up yourself.
Kodi itself has policies and disclaimers against illegal streaming and downloads and don't support these addons officially, but then they do nothing to stop them working either.

Point is there is almost always a work around. Kodi itself is a perfectly legal bit of software, it's the addons and how they are used that is dodgy. Never mind where you might have got the content from that you use Kodi to watch :)
You can't ban a cassette player from sale because it could be used to copy a record.... to bring up an ancient precedent.

actually, they tried :-)
They also tried to make circuitry that would make cassette recorders unable to record records (that failed)
then tried to ban VHS/Beta vid recorders
then bought in those "audio CDR" . A Euro thing, they were the only CD's that the fangled Philips/marantz hifi/music CD recorders would work with . Cost more, with some of
the $ going to record companies . Cant get them anymore making those hifi CD recorders worthless (I had one, gave up trying to get the compatable blanks )

go far enough back (1920's ? ) & get the court case of a singer trying to stop radio stations from ever playing his recordings . :banana

For wrestling better off signing up to the WWE Network for US$9 . 99 a month, that includes all the tv shows on Sky AND the pay-per-views which I think are at least $30 a pop through Sky . Probably similar deals around for the UFC and Boxing too .
