1442542 2017-11-25 02:07:00 We went to an outdoor wedding in Sydney over the weekend and brought home a souvenir wooden parasol. When we declared it at Customs the young girl had no idea what a parasol was. We had to explain it in simple terms and we were allowed to bring it in.

Surely a parasol is not that uncommon? You'd think Customs would employ people with a good general education.:waughh:

1442543 2017-11-25 02:25:00 Well parasol as a name isn't exactly common.....
I don't know, we were quite confused down south initially when people went on about luxing and their superheaters.....

1442544 2017-11-25 02:41:00 We just got back from a Holiday from Vanuatu last week.

We decided to declare everything even if unsure, including a large carving we had purchased, the guy asked what it was - A carved wooden turtle-- All he asked was it varnished or such --YEP-- Sweet no problems, didn't even look at it. We even declared some other things, which he said we didn't need to.

Mind you he did hesitate at the Picnic Bars ?? I saw how he was looking :drool, said you hungry, we got a couple to spare-- he just laughed -- Go on through- -- Welcome back.

Some didn't like the comment I must have made a little to loud when walking back into the internal lounge to the duty free -- Sh1t this dump Auckland is COLD brrrrrr.

And it was compared to where had just came from.

We did get some strange looks though when coming back to wellington -- just a couple of bottles of booze ;)

1442548 2017-11-25 19:19:00 In the case of a parasol, it is usually made with a light wooden frame and a heavy colourful paper covering. I'm quite certain you've seen one but you may not have known what it was called. Roscoe (6288)
1442549 2017-11-25 22:13:00 A parasol is an umbrella with delusions of grandeur and reduced practicality. R2x1 (4628)

Google for a picture, often used by "Well Bred" ladies to keep the sun off their delicate skins. PJ
